He Who Passes Judgment

esgSbzL.png

“I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against.”

......He sits upon his chair, his back pressing firmly against the wooden rigidity of the arch. Overhead burns the lanterns casting thick shadows upon the ceiling. The room is large, overbearing by all those who stood before the podiums, the stench of parchment and wood oozes into the throats of the jury, the court beckons forth muffles of conversation from the curious.
......Despite the warmth of the room, the blood in the bodies of the accused run cold. His eyes cast themselves down upon the accused, his judgment silent and thoughtful. He drifts his palms to linger the wooden bench counter. He watches the audience take their seats, and lastly, he watches the accused settle into their nervous posture.

......“Is the court ready?”

Truth and Condemnation

......His voice rings deep and proud, illuminated by the glow of flame. A slow chorus returns his voice back to him, affirmation urging him to motion. He gestures to the accused and his gaze slips down to parchment unfurled and beckoning his attention.

......“You stand before me, and the court,” He adds, glancing from the parchment to the faces of the people, drifting back downward. “For crimes of theft, and attempted kidnapping for ransom.”

......If the audience wished to gasp, they knew they could not. Yet the silence turns milky in thickness, rotten with an eagerness to know the story of a person whom they did not know. Zanthos takes no joy in idle rumor, he relishes in the fact and evidence. To condemn the innocent seems a plague upon the heart, and not a plague he is willing to burden himself with. So the story is let to develop before him, and he nods, comparing the information given to him alongside the evidence presented.

......He is sure there are some among the court that will have their opinions of the accused’s wrongdoing, and some who believe the accused to be a creature of innocence. Mortal bias is a difficult beast to overcome, and a beast Zanthos takes to slaying as often as he is able to manage. Even the vilest of crimes demand the attention and care of an impartial judge.

......And there he sits. A deity, a giver of life and death, of punishment and acquittance. He becomes the harbinger of justice, a creature of devout, divine reverence. His word is law, and his word is final. He listens with careful consideration and delivers his sentence to the enraptured audience. He is aware of those who will refute his choice, but he knows they are not the ones who sit upon the courtroom throne. Their opinions mean little to him. Zanthos is aware of the burdened hearts that demand fervent justice. It is not a trap he wishes to fall into.

......The story unfurls before him, a clenched fist whose falling fingers begin to tremble, bared before the judge. The room is silent, save for the distant ring of bells far beyond the windowed glass and arching ceiling. Zanthos calls upon himself for thought, allowing the audience a moment of reprieve to chatter. The jury does the same, falling into themselves to decide upon the situation.

......The verdict does not fall easily from Zanthos’s lips. He breathes a moment, inhaling the warm air and delivering the words in calm composure. Charged for theft but not for kidnapping. He thinks it is fair, it is a sentence that calls for the clanking chains of a prison cell, but Zanthos notes it is not a long serve, and it is one that brings hope for change. He wishes the accused a better life beyond the one he has been given, and among the silence of the crowd, the accused leaves in the company of guards.

......“Far too lenient!” Cries the tantrum voice of a woman far from the court. She taps her foot and casts her gaze to the city crier. “That monster deserves far worse!”

......“That poor creature,” Moans another. “A life plagued by crime. That judge has no heart.”

......Zanthos walks a path beyond them both. It is wrought with challenge. He sits in the knowledge that the outcome will never please all, but his heart is lightened by the thought that his judgment is just and true. Beyond the court, his fingers find the petals of flowers and the tips of his taloned nails stroke the spines of leaves. He finds there is much peace in nature. A world that is not touched by morals, but by instinct. It calms his ponderous heart, until the silhouette of a woman appears, his vision caught by her.

......“May I help you?” He asks, hands retreating from the flowers to rest behind his back.

......“You were wrong,” Her voice whispers. It carries no strength nor bite, but it lingers with pain, her brows furrow with irritation. “The facts were there but you didn’t listen. That creature is dangerous, how could you not see it?”

......He thinks her bold for her overt statement. His features remain stern, swallowing a quiet thought to eye her with a curious, yet stoic displeasure.

......“I have done,” He begins, offering her a brief pause to allow her to adjust to the tone of his voice. “What I have done before you, before this trial, and before I knew of judgement. I trusted myself, and my ability to look at what is put before me.”

......“Then how could you be so blind?”

......Her question haunts the air before she turns to depart. Her footfalls disintegrate to the echoing halls and his eyes fall back to the flowers. They bob in the softest drift of wind curling through the chamber. He closes his eyes and allows himself to recall her tone. The hurt in her voice suggests her personal affliction with the case presented. He cannot blame her, nor can he find blame in anyone. Zanthos has seen what a troubled soul can cling to. He thinks, perhaps, she is reminded of something in her own life. He hopes for her, and his fingertips find the petals of the flower once more.

I’ve seen your lair before (from the accent thread aha) and it’s honestly so so beautiful, I love your use of accents so much and the colours throughout your lair are awe inspiring honestly, but I have to say my favourite is the guy is this boy:
His accent is just the most incredible thing I’ve seen in ages, and his colours compliment it so so well so even though it was one of the hardest choices I’ve had on this thread I have to say this imperial boy wins aha.
