PRIMAL EYED

mercenary corp; mercenary.
he/him.
bisexual.
one hundred and eighty years old.
It’s so routine that at first, she barely notices that anything is wrong. Two plump, slick eggs sit in their nest, incubating in sickly heat. Sprinkled with flora and water as a testament and reminder of their parent’s flights, the eggs rock slightly. The first opens without incident; a small hatchling with red eyes blinks up. Brid smiles and strokes a gentle finger down it’s snout, and it nuzzles into it’s mother’s warmth. A few minutes later, the other egg begins to rock, slime drooling from the insides. It takes a moment longer. The slime is thick, oozing, beginning to tangle in the nestmate’s paws. Brid tries to wipe the excess away from the second hatchling’s face, but instead of ooze, her fingers bump against something soft, squishy, with slight give. It’s face is covered in pockets of liquid, pustules consume the newborn’s face.

Brid screams.

It’s not the best start. His seasoned parents have been in plague for a long time, but neither are too endeared to the lands, and neither want anything to do with the child; not malicious enough to abandon him wholesale, but their interactions are limited. He is still young, a little confused, draping himself over or under his nestmate when he finds himself lonely. But he is still very young, a few weeks, when their behaviour is challenged.

The spymaster notices- and although it surprises him, this child without eyes, he refuses to tolerate the hint of ill treatment. He argues with the father, his own personal physician, and the argument escalates until someone else steps in. She kneels down and gently picks the hatchling up, placing him around her neck. Not a word is said. The argument tapers out, she meets everyone’s eyes, not defiant but already decided, and brings him up as her own.

She is the eldest member of the mercenary kingdom, a once infamous mercenary, the Hunter of the East. Her name is Citlalmina, and she names the blessed child Tallahassee.

The first thing everyone always notices is how ugly he is. It’s the first thing strangers comment on. He sees it coming- noses scrunched up, eyes averted, or widened, grimaces, retching from those of weaker constitutions. The first thing hammered into him since day one is just how horrific his visage is. He blinks through the maze and miasma that spreads out as a permanent infection, the stain on his ugly, ugly face; it’s not the only ugly thing, his arms and legs are too long for his body, his bony and ropy body, mottled pink skin, hair that seems to be dipped in moss, sickly green and oranges, he’s a horror to see.

He smiles back at his reflection with a wink that churns the liquid inside his ‘eyes’.

The second thing everyone always notices is his countenance. His presence exudes an uninhibited air, the aroma of casual relaxation as close on his skin as the smell of something rotting. He is a man who has accepted that he is repulsive to the extreme, and now shrugs it off like oil on water. It’s not all that important anyway- he’ll make jokes too when they’re slung his way, a quirked smile, shiny teeth.

Citlalmina has taught him how to use his talents, the sword and the red festering magic that rolls in torrents inside of him. It’s his luck. He finds himself in the right place at the right time, his swings hit vital points. Fatal attacks miss him by a hair. He smiles, and cheers, and he defends his fellow mercenaries, pulling them out of danger at the very last second. He knows everyone has a rough time warming up to him- and in a way, he makes up for it. If they can look (ha) past his visage, they’ll find he’s not so bad after all.

Of course there's more going on than the boy with the sword and disgusting eyes, there's a man who loves to cook when he can convince everyone else that he's not going to leak onto the food. Whilst it's just a hobby, he thoroughly enjoys baking, even if he leaves flour behind, making a mess of himself and the room. With a laugh and waved hand he cleans it up. Although his friend group is a strange thing, filtered and moving, accepted and yet never fully in the clique, he's quite the measure more witty than anyone expects from him; spooky guesses on people's pasts notwithstanding. It's only sometimes that when he comes back to his room for the night that he puts his fist through the mirror. It's not like anyone ever comes in after him to see the glass and the blood.
