What Lurks in the Swamp
"This is the part where you run away."
The clan needed more space for their members and familiars to spread out, but they were steadily running out of places to turn. They'd heard from passing-through members of other clans not to go much further north-east than where they already were, as a terrifying old hermit dragon lived there, and any who tried to claim the land for themselves would return to their clan with fresh wounds, and a high possibility for infection. But they've gone through stranger things, and they were getting a little desperate. Morwyn took a small searching party, ready for anything, to scout out the area they were looking at. Surprisingly, most of it was clear, no signs of anyone living there. Until they reached a swamp. Fairly deep at points, with heavy tree cover, so thick that even early in the day, the light wouldn't reach the water. One of the dragons stepped wrong and fell into one of the deeper parts, thrashing and making a lot of noise trying to escape, when suddenly, a large clawed hand reached up and grabbed their head, pushing them under the water. A mound of algae lifted up from the swamp, revealing purple scales and glowing green eyes. A couple of the dragons dove under the water to try and get their fellow dragon back, while Morwyn flew right up to the face of their current presumed adversary.
"Release my clanmate!"
It complied and lifted its hand back up, holding the smaller dragon in its claws.
"Leave this swamp alone, and warn others from coming here as well. And never return."
The rest of the party was just about to agree, when he stopped them and looked the other dragon in the eyes. |
"Why do you not accept visitors?"
This clearly left it puzzled, shifting and letting the water ripple around it.
"Every clan before has sought to destroy this swamp, make it more livable for the dragons. But this swamp is my charge, along with all the creatures living in it."
A smile curled the at edges of Morwyn's lips, relaxing his stance.
"We are searching for more space, yes, but we can promise we won't terraform your charge. Perhaps we can work together; we can help defend this swamp, and you help us find more suitable land for expansion."
A growl sounded from the dragon's throat, causing ripples across the water's surface. But slowly, it grinned back.
"You have a deal, shadow."
Slowly, a pair of large wings lifted from the water as well, lilypads and vines coming with them- and frogs. Many, many frogs, croaking their song at the newcomers. Fireflies danced out from the treeline, and snakes slithered up trunks, familiars of all shapes and sizes revealing themselves, as if they sensed the bargain being made.
"Take care regarding my land, and you'll get no trouble from me or my companions."
"Then welcome to the Sanctuary- what's your name?" "..No one has asked me that in a long, long while." He hummed and lowered his head to the water. "Bathory." |
