Pandora had always been the kind of dragon who wanted to know exactly how things worked, down to every last gear and twitch. The typical spiral exuberance and the lightning thorough-mindedness had combined in her to produce a never-ceasing drive to take things apart just to see what made them tick. If there was ever a dragon who would do exactly what she was told not to do, just to see what happened, and then try doing it again a different way, it was Pandora. She never quite knew when to leave well enough alone. Trouble had a tendency to follow in her footsteps.

Unfortunately, the fates also conspired to make Pandora seem more trustworthy than she really was. Unusually level headed for a spiral, she was able to sit still and be calm for as long as it took for her to listen to something, or finish some task. And with her silver tongue, she always had a plausible sounding reason why something or other was now in pieces, or making strange ticking noises, or performing a completely different function that it was supposed to. Her drive to tinker with things was just seen as her being a typical lightning dragon, albeit with the influence of her ebullient spiral heritage. And for every disaster and picked apart device, she had some equally brilliant find or creation that seemed to make up for it.

So of course, when some of the arcane dragons of her clan began to try to build a smaller version of the reactor whose meltdown had created the Arcanist, she was the last one who should have been allowed on the project, and the first one who volunteered. The combination of her technical prowess and their magical expertise moved the project along at a good rate. She buried herself in old texts about the Second Age and the Arcanist's creation, to learn best how to recreate the reactor based on the technology of the time, and found herself fascinated. The combination of magic and technology, and all the exciting implications, were intoxicating. It was a topic so complex that she could spend years studying exactly how the two influenced each other.

The reactor was only meant to be a theoretical work, an attempt to identify and correct the mistakes made in the first one, to see whether it could actually be done. The group had only intended to test it with low level energy production, not the massive magical overload that had caused the first accident. But Pandora insisted that it would have to be tested to its limits to see whether they had truly been successful, and her enthusiasm was catching. The reactor was fired up, pushed to higher and higher levels, taking in truly impressive amounts of magical energy... And then following the legacy of its ancestor, exploded impressively right in all their faces. By the time she stopped seeing fireworks, Pandora realized that the magical fallout had changed her. Her hide was streaked with tarry black markings, her horns had bleached to bone white and branched out crazily, and her wings were covered with dozens of little, blinking eyes. And numerous lacerations and radiation burns, but who even cared. Pandora was thrilled. The other dragons, less so.

Pandora's stock wasn't particularly high with her old clan, who blamed her for the accident, so she left them. She had only planned to wander through the Ashfall Waste on her way to the Starfall Isles, where she hoped to find like-minded dragons to repeat the experiment, but what she found there made her stay. The innovations of the smiths, who mix magic with their metallurgy, intrigued her, and she found a clan who not only needed but welcomed her particular brand of tinkering. Should the clan find some odd new device they can't work their way around, be it some new lock that they can't pick or a magical alarm, they bring it to Pandora. Provided they don't mind it being taken to pieces with only half a chance of being put back together, that is. But she can tell them how everything works within a day of study, and how to disarm or otherwise work around it, making her invaluable to their work. She works with magic now as easily as any arcane dragon, and her extra eyes seem to see differently than normal ones, allowing her to pick out magical fluxes or electrical fields. Although her multitude of staring eyes can be a little unnerving, the clan has seen worse, and she is more known among them for her brilliantly unorthodox work than her magical mutations.
