alignment- lawful evil
allegiance- triumvirate of bone
7lSzMGp.png
The Triumvirate is whispered of, in the Headrest, occasionally. it's funny how loose-lipped hunters get when they assume their quarry is dead.

Sure, the fae was dangerous, they say, and Idol watches out of the corner of his eye as Anpan does his level best to hug a quillrunner, but their leader was more so. Don't tell me he wasn't the one to start the raid on the Orchard of Thorns. Don't tell me he didn't break steel caravans to dust with a brush of his hand and a smirk on his face. Don't tell me he wasn't ruthless above all else.

and, well- that last part is just plain inaccurate.

Let's try that again; from the top. If you were to know only one thing about Idol, one crucial fact that shapes his entirety, outside titles or allegiances or what he calls himself, it would be this-

He cares too much.

It is not an affliction associated with anyone in the plaguewastes, least of all the leader of the most feared raiding band in the Contagion- and yet he stands over a new grave with no body in it and he cries.

There wasn’t enough food to last them the winter, and no travelers run the gorge in the winter. The law is survival at all costs, here, and so the deputies hoarded their extra rations and hatchlings went hungry. The Triumvirate stood in Hope’s tent, Sugar leaning against a chair and wincing with every breath in. They’d tried to take a Coffin Guard shipment, when the youngest hatchlings had gotten too weak to move.

It hadn’t worked.

It hadn’t worked, but Hope and Sugar, their posture straight and eyes desperate, are begging him to try it again. The Coffin Guard’s line will either break, they say, and we’ll have food for the year- or it will break those we send, and well. Free food either way.

Idol tells them no, and when he wakes up that night he is alone in the camp. He curses under his breath and goes looking for a siren.

There are rumours about the king of the Melting Court; that he is beautiful as the sea in winter and as the dawn itself. That his magic is strong enough to bend hundreds at a time to his will.
That he keeps two emperors as pets. That he’s cold as the sea in winter, as well.

For the sake of his family, Idol hopes the last one’s false.

He stands in an empty cathedral- maybe it once paid homage to the Tidecaller, but it doesn’t matter, anymore- it is the home of another god now. Waves lap at the edges of old ivory fountains, marble statues of dragons draped in silk turned pearlescent by time and fading paint. He reverences, deep, towards the sea, and begs it listen to him-
And the skydancer in front of him smiles like the rising sun.

When Idol returns to the camp with sirens at his heels and music in his head, Hope is nursing a broken leg. One of the littlest mirrors dislocated their shoulder. They’re both sitting on piles of supplies. Idol makes eye contact with Sugar and waits until she breaks it before he goes to find wherever they put the old blood. He’s the only one who knows how to use it, anyways.

The sirens draw enough to the Gorge to keep them fed, but the successful raid on the Coffin Guard has made the pack greedy. They start taking shipments in twos and threes, and someone always gets hurt, but they don’t seem to care. Not like Idol does.

When Sugar takes a hatchling out for a training raid and only the little one returns, he breaks.

The Siren’s Earl, Piper, (and oh god he was her charge, wasn’t he,) starts screaming and doesn’t stop, and it drives half the pack into the sea and the other half to tear each other to pieces where they stand. The leaders and the Melting Court are the only ones to escape- and even then only barely.

Wherever they go, they hear the snarling of a pack of mirrors turned feral behind them. When what remains of the Triumvirate find the Orchard of Thorns, they’re half-wild themselves.

The sirens haven’t sung in weeks. Hope’s right eye, untreated since the break, has failed him completely. All they can remember, looking at the wrought iron fence surrounding the Orchard, is how these are the ones that must have killed her.
Idol touches the bars of the Iron Citadel, and it rusts to nothing in his grip.

They run past the little open air markets, sparing no thought to the pervasive rot that grows where their feet land, that the trees in their path age and fall in time to the beating of the drums in their head that grows ever louder-

The pack is behind them now-

And Agust limps out of the largest of the towers scattered around the Orchard, and they stop and stare, and Idol begins to cry.

I wanna die right now
I wanna, I wanna fall right now
걱정이 싫어 인생은 길어
걍 가 I wanna live right now
브레이크 부러졌으니 밟아 엑셀
이러나 저러나 사람 신세
다 안다면 무슨 재미냐 고통은 내 훈장
그래서 so what?

you might not have been my first love
but you were the love that made
all the other loves
