Visitors tend to find Vanparys’ bakery quaint. Its wood is always freshly varnished, and the wafts of steam that cloud the windows smell of brown butter and royal icing. The petit fours in the tray marked ‘take one’ are all soft creams and pastel blues, with pink, bell-shaped flowers nestled on top. You really shouldn’t have snuck the extra one, but they were so sweet.

The dizziness doesn’t set in until you’ve already left. Then the migraine, and you have to lean against a tree to avoid falling- you look back in the panicked haze of your memory (was the baker wearing a halo or had it already started you seeing things), maybe it’s just something you-
ate.

one pitch oleander blossom has no effect on a grown dragon, but two is more than enough to kill.

The tray is marked ‘take one’ for a reason, after all.
