Watchfire sentinel

Amadou's eyes are especially sensitive to light, leaving her blind behind a layer of headscarves by day. The upside -- if you can call it that, which she certainly does -- is that she is especially good at seeing in the dark, and can pinpoint fine variations in the shadows that sidle in close to the Flat at night.

That's how she came to be one of the many dragons tasked with keeping the cedarwood watchfires safe and fed at the town's border. The firelight is less troubling than true sunlight, and the dry heat of it is pleasing against the inescapable humidity of the Wasteland air. She usually keeps her eyes pointed beyond the edge of the fire, toward the suble shift of dark and the occasional rows of eyes that stare back sometimes but never dare to venture too close.

Amadou's stationed at the Gold Dust Watchpoint, one of the most remote watchfires in the County. While other sentinels found the Gold Dust station too removed and lonely to bear after too long, Amadou finds the distance comforting, dialing down the hum and buzz of the Flat's activity to a soothing white noise backdrop that she need not pay too much attention to unless strictly necessary.

All she has to worry about is the dark.
