Agony

it is a terrible thing, to be alone. to many, the word itself may be the saddest they've heard. but it does not begin to capture the feeling. and loneliness is all little agony has ever known.

mama, is that you? why? why did you abandon me? where are you, mama? what did i do wrong? why didn't you want me? these were the questions that plagued the young spirals mind for as long as he could remember. even before he could vocalize these desperate cries, he felt them in the very depths of his aching heart.

he stumbled through the dark for as long as his memory stretched back. he didn't remember who he was, or what his mother looked like. he didn't remember her voice, or her touch, or why she left him. only that she did, and that nothing felt right since that day. he would sleep at night and continue his search during the morning hours, until he could go no further. looking for something he didn't know how to find.

when he learned to speak, it was all he could say. every dragon he met was asked the same question; "have you seen my mama? where is she?" many sympathetic dragons took pity on him, offering to take him under their wing. but he didn't want a new family, he wanted his old one back.

he never stayed anywhere for more than a week. when it was obvious mother was not among them, he moved on. no one really knows what became of his mother. many wonder if she if she is still alive. there is something unusual about the hatchling, as well.

the pain he has suffered has seemed to cease his aging. he seems cursed to remain a hatchling until he is reunited with his mother and given the opportunity to grow. many who have encountered him are not sure he is fully mortal himself... there is speculation he is something more of a spirit, left to this world to relive his darkest moment until closure is found.
