She traded him for his watery companion, but why? What did he give her?
Lore
written by zafer

Cryus had always belonged to a crowd, having eight older siblings when he hatched and plenty more to come. The little haven his family belonged to felt warm when chasing each other under the soft glow of the crystals and peaceful when wading in the iridescent pools. He never slept without a scale or wing touching another dragon. Life was good.

Leave. They told him, he had to leave. Why? It was tradition, they replied calmly. He had to explore the world and find his place in it. But he knew nothing of the other world. His world, his haven, would be gone forever when he left. He could visit but he couldn't stay. Not anymore. But there was no way to fight the will of the family nor of the caves. His heart broke as he said good-bye to everything he had known.

Life was different outside. The dragon's eyes were harder, teeth were sharper, and thoughts so much more cold. He unknowingly traded something he can not remember for his watery companion from a dragon whose smile was as warm as the ice flight's flurries. He spent many days trudging through mud without a single pool to clean his scales. Nights were spent shivering and staring at the ever moving shadows.

There were groups before this one. Nothing was the same as the place he had once belonged to and everything he did felt hollow. However, slowly, he healed as days and nights passed as he met others lost and wandering. He was more than grateful for the few with nothing hiding behind their kind words.

In time, he grew wiser. It was not an easy process and he didn’t always know how to feel about his new knowledge. There were many days spent with a deep longing for the past when catching the tail of a sibling was his only worry. Those days he didn’t feel as he should. However, there were also days were he found new experiences and warm dragons. Those days, he thought at their end, were worth the darker days.

When he found himself in the company of these dragons, he could see how disconnected each one was. Most moved like a ghost, without thought. Cryus understood and there was a moment of clarity. He would provide as much comfort as he could to the wary group.

He sold himself to them as a dragon with the ability to find water in the dry lands of the earth flight. This was the one time he found his fish companion a reassurance as it guided him to water without fail. But in time, the dragons coming for a drink stayed for a chat as well. Those chats changed into long conversations which only ended with time would not permit them to continue.

Cryus was cool water in his haven of stones and dust. When the sandstorms blind his new family, he does his best to give them water and let them speak until they were calm. On dark nights, when their fears would easily swallow them, they can snuggle underneath the wing of their giant imperial and feel safe. It wasn’t the same as the place he had so long ago and he doesn’t know if it is better but he liked this new family and wanted to help them. That was enough for him.
