He uses his knowledge to improve and defend Cornaole, but also to teach the each generation's youth- although Laputa isn't thrilled with that part of his work, Gvel is full of determination when it comes to educating the next leaders of Cornaole.

He spent weeks hunting down sea ripples and placing them into bottles. When his collection exceeded few hundreds, Laputa opened his own store.

Gvel, the Chronist

Sure, he knew what he was doing. He knew, that the most interesting part will begin after he arrived at Cornaole. The village wasn't far from where he was - he was born in these cold lands, and the clan of musicians was located not far from his home. Yet, compared to where he was born, the lands of Cornaole had a spectacular diversity of sounds, colors and waters.

His enthusiasm for ripples on the water was similar to the way entomologists are affected by insects, and botanists their plants. One could say Laputa was nearly in love with the ripples, as he was so in awe of them. Speaking and working with these ripples turned from a pastime to his work. After he had collected enough of his ripples, he had opened up shop, to share them with others.
While he appreciated them as they were, other seemed to have trouble understanding them. While others just saw water, Laputa could see how each specimen was different. With a glance he could distinguish ripples by their unique colors and rhythm, height and width, cause of appearance and length of life. Then, when he had finished observing them and jotting down notes, Laputa collects those of whom with the stories that had fascinated him the most.
Of course, it made sense not just anyone could see the beauty of the ripples, nor understand his awe, and interest in them. Afterall, not just anyone could speak to the ripples.
You see, the ripples (according the Laputa) are like simple lifeforms, and they would never answer to such a rough language as Dragonish. So instead, Laputa decided to master music in order to communicate with them. The "Game of Angklung" - as it eventually became to pass in Cornavol; is his way to "talking" to the ripples.
Laputa has used his intrument, the angklung, as the gateway to his ever expanding research on the ripples.

It was there, in Cornaole - "the land of musicians", that he met Maysar, whose workshop had more than once come in handy in Laputa's work. Not long after coming to Cornavol, Laputa had met with the capricious Captain Esphir, who told them of how Maysar had created the enanke - dragons, which embodied in themselves various currents of the sea. One such enanke, Soel, had quickly become Laputa's companion in underwater travel. Honestly, it is they, these children of the sea enanke, that impressed Laputa most. Soel often laughed without understanding his passion, but still Laputa didn't mind, and still wrote everything down- excitedly observing Soel, and watching for the almost imperceptible waves that rippled around her.

• Together with Soel, Laputa exchanges humorous verses that they write to each other. All of them are stored in his jacket, as if it were real treasure.

How to Hunt for Sea Ripples

• Step One: Notice the ripples that stand out against the background of others with their liveliness. Look at the color. If they have warm shades - talk with them in the language of the rays. If it's cold - play minore. Rusty green shades are likely to be no less interested in communicating than yourself.

• Step Two: Take a musical instrument - preferably a quiet one - and carefully play it. Observe the reaction of ripples. If they are frightened, they can slip farthur away or disappear altogether. I have noticed that the evening ripples of warm currents like old lullabies.

• Step Three: When the ripples calm down, take a flask and gently catch them. One needs to be as calm as possible so as not to ruin their tender bodies. After completing the hunt, pour ripples into a space aquarium, or store in a flask in a quiet, low traffic, place.
