Hal knows about his past, about his ancestry, keeping the book of urban legends in which he first discovered Naomi's tale close to him at all times. Even though he does not appear to have inherited any of the telltale powers of his bloodline, Hal is still treated as somewhat of an outcast amongst the clan, as kind as they are to him, he is undoubtedly aware of how they must speak of him in his absence. Lonely by nature, Hal keeps his distance from the rest of the clan, save for Faillon, his childhood friend, but has had encounters with the other Naomi Descendent to have entered the clan, Alexa, on a few occasions, although Faillon is the only dragon he has ever truly felt a connection to. Perhaps one day he will be able to find the words to explain to her all the things that he knows, even though she could never know, she should never know, how the clan, despite the rowdiness of them all, is always silent to him, how, although they sit upon the cliff face and stargaze the nights away, that he sees nothing, how he can't feel her as he rests upon her head, how, as hard as he tries to find answers to all of these things, his ancestors never answer his pleas, how, really, he's never felt this way before, like words forcing themselves into his mouth, how all there ever is to him is a screen... How he's so glad that, amongst the not quite reality of his existence, that she is his something, even if she isn't a reality. ... In the end, maybe it doesn't matter. ... Maybe it's all just a game. |
