______ "Entrance ID, please." The little mirror hatchling was shaking, so small and so nervous. A recent refugee from a dissolving water clan, Rigel wasn't even sure if she understood the tongue of the Southern Icefields.
"I'm sorry...I don't think I have one."
"When you were found, one of our hunters should've given you an ID card. If you don't have one, I'm afraid I can't submit your paperwork to be processed." Rigel tutted, then went back to doing Bluebell's gruntwork. But a pathetic whining noise turned his attention back to the now-sniveling hatchling.
"I...I'm sorry, I had a paper, but I dropped it in the snow...and I couldn't find it...and I can't go home, please, you have to help me!" She choked on her words, tears dribbling out of her four eyes.
"Oh Rigel, can't you see the poor thing is upset enough?" A low voice emanated from one of the shadowy corridors as a cloaked pearlcatcher strolled out to greet the pair. A bird mask shielded his face, but both Rigel and the hatchling could see the pity in his eyes.
"..Foxglove, you know I don't make the ru-"
"I'll take her from here. I bet I can pull some strings to get her all set."

______ The library was beautiful. Tombs upon tombs lined the walls of the icy cave, impeccably organized. The shelves stretched all the way to the tall ceiling, which let in the weak tundra sun through an icy barricade, faceted to reflect light into delicate patterns on the floor. A serthis winding his way across the floor carrying a bundle of scrolls gave Foxglove a deferential nod, slinking over to the pearlcatcher.
"Amun, go fetch me the Census Records from last spring." The serthis nodded again and rushed off, tucking the scroll he was carrying along with the others on his back. Foxglove sighed, turning to his young companion.
"It's so hard to get a serthis to stay down here. Too little light, too little heat. I bribe them all, handsomely, but they always leave eventually. I don't think Amun will be staying with me much longer." The little mirror had stopped her sobbing, wiping at her eyes to look up at Foxglove.
"I-I'm sorry. It's never fun to lose a friend."
"Hm, I wouldn't necessarily call Amun a friend," he turned, smiling at the child, "You, on the other hand, I might." She smiled back, the first time she had since she was forced to leave her home.
"Now, what is your name, little one?"
"...Raina..."
"Raina! What a lovely name." Amun had returned with a large book bound with silver clasps, handing it off to Foxglove. "I've met many Rainas in my life, but none as lovable as you." Raina giggled as Foxglove opened the book and began to flip through its many pages. He paused, then strode over to one of the many desks in the room and pulled out a piece of parchment. With a simple flick of his claw, a number scrawled itself on the parchment, which he handed to Raina.
"Here. This number should work on your paperwork. I'll walk you back out to Rigel."

Raina took the bundle of paperwork and ink quill in her tiny claws and trotted over to a desk, eager to begin the menial task. Once she was out of earshot, Rigel turned to talk to the pearlcatcher.
"Why did you give her an old exaltee number? She'll just be sent off to the training camps now." All the kindness that Folxglove had once shown vanished from his voice, now as cold as the winds outside.
"Her fate was sealed the minute she was found. I'm just speeding it along."
