In a effort so save his mate, Carduus began studying the dark macial arts of old. The wicked crafts were the only magic strong enough to reverse the horrible curse put on his beloved and he spent every wake hour reasing books and preforming spells in hopes of finding a cure.

The more he learned, the stronger the darkness grip on him got. Soon the effect of his magic began to show on him as dark vines with sharp thorns sprouted from his body and slithered itself arounf his wings and neck. It hurt like nothing he had ever felt before but he kept on going.

His mate Cinaede begged him to stop, she could not stand seeing him in pain. Yet Carduus did not listen. As his powers grew stronger, her life grew weaker. Then finally, after many years of searching he found the answer he had been looking for. A spell to reverse the curse of his beloved, a way to save her. He took his newfound treasure and returned to Cinaede's side. But he was too late. Her sickness had gotten worse, her body would not be able to withstand his magic anymore. She was dying. During her last moments Cinaede told him that she could hear her old diety calling for her to come join her in the The Scarred Wasteland once more, where she truly belonged. Using a huge amount of his powers he transported the both of them to the edge of The Wyrmwound. There the pair was greeted with devoted followers of the Plaguebringer. They took Cinaede under their wings and led her away, but before she left she gave her love one last kiss and one last good bye before wandering away from him forever.

After that day Carduus never spoke again. His last words had been "I'm sorry, I failed you." He now lives shut of from the world, deep within the clans lair. His room is filled with an unpleasent dark aura that keeps dragons from going near him. Very few clan members are brave enough to enter his study, save for the Clan Leaders and Lumen.
