______ Come home, Vidar.

Vee dreams of magic. He dreams of many things, but most of them are magic. The rest are being carved open on a stone table. There's not much of a difference between the two in the end, he supposes, but he's never wanted either.

Is this a memory or a dream? he asks in his sleep. Nothing ever answers, and Vee wakes every dawn with a headful of magenta and inky tendrils of bad intention, the feel of fingers tracing the frown lines on his face, the insatiable desire to run until his legs give out beneath him playing tug-of-war with some primal urge to stand and scream blasphemy at an imploding sky. He's not old, but he feels like he is.

Vee gives in to instinct. He runs; he makes a living legacy out of Running, out of helping others do the same. He wonders if they all have dreams filled with color and whispering, if the gods beg subservience of all the defiant or if they're content to let them go, knowing they'll get everyone in the end. Even the Runners.

Vee doen't know what the magic wants of him. Tell me what I am, he asks the universe, the magic, the silent gods.

Something under his feet that is none of those things sends electricity buzzing up his spine in reply. I can tell you, it says.
