„Hailstorm has always been a bit … different. While Frostbite and Quicksilver lead our pack of mirrors with confidence and skill, he has always been the odd one of the bunch. His movements are so clumsy, his mouth never ceases to blabber on and he just can’t stay still, no matter how dire the situation. Most think that he’s a lost cause, at least when it comes to hunting and scavenging. He is better at destroying things than doing them. The number of tails and toes he has accidentally stepped on is countless and so is the number of valuable objects that became his victim. Sometimes I wonder how he managed to survive for this long at all. I cannot count the times I had to defend his actions or stop him from harming himself or others in his excitement. Hailstorm’s more like a puppy, really. You can’t leave him alone unsupervised. It will only end in chaos. But many fail to see beyond his clumsy, excited self and only see his flaws. They don’t want to hunt with him or participate on scavenging trips because it means that they have to deal with his constant tripping and trouble-causing. They fail to see the wonderful father that he is, making his children laugh and cheering up his great-granddaughter in the darkest of times. They don’t see the effort he puts into raising abandoned hatchlings with me and with how much passion he fulfills his role as the clan’s messenger. If there is one dragon I’d ask for directions it would be him. He knows these lands better than anyone else, flying out almost every day, fearing neither cold wind nor storm. I know that it can be hard to understand him sometimes. He stumbles over words and repeats himself constantly. Three words become one, syllables are left out or replaced with others, creating a jumbled mess of sounds. Sometimes he talks so fast that even I struggle to understand him. Most don’t even take the time to listen properly; he’s talking nonsense they will say, waving off his concerns or his good advice as gibberish or hatchling’s speech. But I listen. I listen whenever he raises his voice, I listen to all of his stories, listen to the jokes he tells the young ones to cheer them up. His harpy listens, too, and sometimes I see them huddled together, debating the war, talking about how this clan has grown, sharing memories with each other or just joking together. Many ask me: why him? Why did I choose him as a mate? And I tell them: Because of the way he treats everyone with respect, even the youngest of this clan. Because his stories are so rich with experience and his voice so full of passion once you care to listen. Because if it wasn’t for him, many of us wouldn’t be here today. Because he keeps me young and supports me and this family in every way possible. Because I love him. And nothing will change that.” |
