Biography

Clan Role:
The eyes of
The Commander during battle, a sentry for the clan in peacetime

Shatterwing trudged through the jungle under the torrential, roaring rain. There shouldn't be this much water outside the Tidelord's realm, she thought to herself. Pulling the soaked hood further over her snout, she began to look for somewhere to shelter from the storm, which did not show any signs of letting up soon.

Life as a solitary wanderer wouldn't be so bad, except there was the wandering part. But deep within these wild forests, surely there had to be somewhere secluded where she could settle down, build a little hut for herself or something, and live peacefully outside of everyone's stares. Since it seemed like they even had plants growing on other plants in the Viridian Labyrinth, she certainly wouldn't have to go far for food, and could stay tucked away from prying eyes.

She didn't mind having multiple eyes, on its own. They gave her some astounding views, being able to see everything all around her at once. It felt like being suspended at the center of an infinite landscape. The only problem was that it was all too easy to see everyone who stared back. She could see everyone's confusion, horror, fascination, and disgust. Once, she managed to catch a glimpse of someone throwing up at the sight of her. Her parents and her clan in general were supportive, and treated her like one of their own, but she felt trapped by a world filled with eyes far more numerous and frightening than her own.

So, one day, she slipped out of her lair, wrapped in a shroud to cover her body as she made her way into isolation. She told herself that when she found a nice quiet place to live alone, she'd write a letter home, and let everyone know that she was okay but never tell them where she was. Now, her searching had brought her here, to a mangled and overgrown jungle she felt she could never find her way out of if she had wanted to.

An eye near her hip spotted the dark shape of a cave of sorts created by the roots of a massive tree. She slogged through the muddy, squelchy forest floor to the entrance. The inside of the cave was dry. At first she felt a wave of relief wash over her, as water dripped from every surface of her body and every fringe of her cloak. She removed the soggy thing and hung it on a protruding root nodule to slowly drip dry. Perhaps now would be a good time for a long rest. But then, she heard voices. Her heart sank. How could there be other dragons out here? She hadn't seen anyone for hours, the forest had been completely deserted!

"Kida? Is that you? I thought you were with Milo back at the clan," another voice called out behind her, from beyond the mouth of the cave. She jumped in fright. A hooded form stepped into the mouth, framed by its dark walls, and approached her. "Oh. You're not Kida. Um... who are you? A new recruit, maybe?" It was a Skydancer, though Shatterwing couldn't make out too much else about her due to the large rain-proof coat and the darkness. Scared and with no idea what to do next, Shatterwing stammered out: "Recruit? Recruit for what?"

The Skydancer cocked her head to one side. "Are you quite okay, dear? You're positively trembling."

Then, from deeper inside the cave: "Saianalen, is that you? Who's that you're with? I thought you went off to scout alone."

The Skydancer responded: "I did. But someone else has come in here to get out of the storm. She's absolutely soaking wet, and she looks terrified. Do any of you have something to help this poor thing dry off?" From deeper within, faint mutterings and shufflings could be heard. Shatterwing suddenly found the Skydancer gripping her wrist, pulling her deeper into the cave. After rounding a sharp bend of ancient roots, they came to a slightly larger chamber, where a faint light glowed in the center of three dragons.

"You're sure she's... not a spy, or something?" Shatterwing heard one of them, a swampy-colored Tundra, whisper to the Skydancer as they drew near.

The Skydancer shook her head. "No. All I'm getting out of this one is fear and confusion. She's not an enemy."

"Well who are you, then?" said a Pearlcatcher with the same colors and patterns as the Tundra. She stood up and placed a dry mantle of cloth around Shatterwing's neck. "Sit, you can tell us who you are and what's going on while you're drying off."

Shatterwing clutched at her pearl tightly. There was something odd about all of this, other than the general circumstances and such. But she hadn't been able to place it until now. With her many eyes, she could see all four of them looking at her, but not in the way she was so accustomed to now. They were looking at her in the same way her parents would if she had finally turned up after going missing. With concern and questions, but the same way they would look at any normal dragon. She wasn't used to this outside of her clan.

"I'm Sh-shatterwing," she said, stuttering from the cold rain still soaking her body more than the fear now.

"Huh, her wings look okay to me," said the swampy Tundra.

"Oh, um, well it's just a cool name, my wings are fine," Shatterwing explained. "My wings are shimmery, so in the light it can look like they're glass smashed into gleaming slivers, and stuff."

"Why are you all the way out here by yourself?" said the fourth dragon, a wise-looking Snapper.

Shatterwing rubbed her pearl thoughtfully and shut her many eyes for a brief second. "I just wanted to find somewhere I could live on my own, peacefully. Without people staring and freaking out."

"Oh, honey," the Skydancer said, patting her on the shoulder, "You're far from the strangest thing any of us have seen around here. Especially with Ramirez wandering around in that costume of his. We have a Serthis in our clan who not only hates fighting, he faints at the sight of blood! You should have seen him when he got that paper cut, oh dear. Perhaps you should come back with us, see if we can't find a place for you with us strange folk, eh?"

Shatterwing blinked, speechless. A Serthis who couldn't stand the slightest bit of blood was just unheard of. And if looking how she did couldn't faze them, what on Sornieth was this Ramirez wearing?

"Okay..." she replied, carefully avoiding her eyes as she dried herself.

It had now been ten weeks since she'd been brought into the clan. She lay stretched out on her belly in her very own lair, eyes closed, taking some well-deserved rest. She now resided in the training compound of the one they called The Commander, who organized the clan's defense soldiers. The Commander had personally charged her with an important task - every time there would be a skirmish, she was to use her many eyes to observe the entire battlefield all at once and report everything she saw via this strange communication device. Otherwise, she was to patrol the clan as a sentry, able to see threats coming from all directions. It was an important, but tiring job.

She had made many new friends among the soldiers. The Commander now relied heavily upon her for reports and battlefield information. Though Shatterwing had yet to experience a real battle, only training runs, The Commander was impressed by her reliability. She promised herself that she would use her unique advantage to its greatest potential, the advantage she used to consider a curse.

She also promised herself that she would write home that night, and let everyone know how she was doing. And where to find her if they wanted to visit.
