RIGEL: Seems to have figured out the most about what kind of being Requiem is, though she's not sure how to go about testing her theories.

Ask anyone in the yeomanry, and they will tell you that Requiem is one of their most prized and valuable detectives. Ask them where she came from, or how she arrived in faraway Direfleet, and you'll get head scratches and questions passed along to colleagues, but no answers. Truth is, no one really seems to have a clear memory of how she got here. As far as anyone can piece together, she's always been here. Or, at least, she's been here as long as they can cast their minds back reliably.

Requiem's friendly enough, but there's something a little... off about her. Her nearly black eyes look just a bit too shiny, a bit too reflective, almost like they were carved from glass or smooth marble. Her feathers are just a bit too stiff, her claws a bit too hard, her footsteps echoing with a bit more weight than they should. Her fur feels just a bit too much like fine-quality velvet rather than hair. Stroke that fur, and you'll find that the flesh beneath feels a bit too hard, a bit too angular, and doesn't quite ripple and give like flesh and muscle should. She pauses just a little too long before she responds to any conversation directed at her. And she's absolutely full of questions.

Not the kind of questions you'd expect from a celebrated investigator, at least not when she's off the clock. When working, Requiem has more than a Skydancer's knack for sussing out the truth of things. Despite her aura of slight oddness, once she speaks, she seems wholly nonthreatening, and facts spill out of suspects who think she's just an eager trainee until the prison guards come in with cuffs and confidence. The bigger fish put up more of a resistance, sure, but in the end, Requiem always gets what she wants, from the mischievous Fae who scrawled lewd graffiti on a statue in Glyph Park all the way up to the Wildclaw bold (or delusional) enough to think he and his meager band of dissenters could assassinate Sengka and take over Direfleet. Outside of her duties, though, Requiem is nosy in bizarre ways, and the questions she asks invariably take new conversation partners by surprise. She asks why you used this particular word to describe something instead of another, or how you decide what flavors you like, or why you find one particular piece of art pleasing and not another. And when you answer, she'll sort of tilt her head and her eyes will go out of focus for a moment before reorienting to you, as if filing the answer away in a mental logbook. She's not interested in whether you had a good day at work or not (though she'll ask anyway, polite as she is), but she will ask how you decided the quality of your day. Some of the more intuitive dragons she's spoken with say she talks like she's trying to figure out how to be a dragon, as if that doesn't come naturally to her. On rare occasions, her reaction to a piece of news won't quite match the tone, and she'll pause, troubled, before shifting to a different emotional affect and studying the other dragon's face for signs she got it right this time.

She seems a bit hesitant and confused when alone, so on her off days, Requiem will latch on to the first available friend, perusing the markets and sampling the restaurants while trying to build herself a profile of interests and opinions. Her recall of facts and timelines is extraordinary, but when it comes to the little nuances that make a dragon a dragon, she's still figuring it all out.

She flinches if you try to touch her face, and if you were to get close enough to part the velvety fur on the underside of her jaw, you'd see something peculiar, the most damning evidence of her identity. A serial number, in fine silver print, reading 313 248 317 - 03.
