0lrFQjQ.png The day Sunfall opened his eyes to the world was a rainy one. No one knows why or how on this particular day, a drop fell from the sun itself, mixing with the rain. It made its way down to earth, where it fell into a clear mountain lake, far away from any civilization. As the sun drop met the lake’s surface, a wave of light spread through the waters, turning it into a golden reflection of sun itself.

A dragon rose from its depths, carrying the sun's light in his scales. His name was Sunfall. Confused and overwhelmed, he blinked into this new world he had been born into, neither knowing his origin or purpose. The only one witnessing his birth was the sun, and she did not provide answers.

Sunfall soon realized that he would not be able to find his purpose in the secluded mountains. He left his place of birth behind and ventured out into the unknown, eager to learn more about himself. Just after he had left the mountains behind, he encountered a group of travelling bards and storytellers. Intrigued by the stranger that seemed lost, yet regal, the group invited Sunfall to join them. For many years he travelled alongside them. They told him stories about all the places they had been to and Sunfall listened with great curiosity.

However, travelling with them also uncovered some details about Sunfall himself. He learned he possessed powers similar to magic, yet different. The world bent to his will with ease and he used these abilities to help those in despair. Also, while his friends grew older with the years, time passed him without a trace. The storytellers told him legends about gods that shared these traits with him and more and more, Sunfall realized that he must be a deity himself.

Some of his friends settled down with age, others continued their journey until their last breath. Eventually, Sunfall was the only one left. He ventured on, uncovering more and more of the world’s secret. The role he was meant to play, however, remained a mystery to him.

One day, he encountered a female Imperial called Starwind. Sunfall taught her the knowledge he had gained, and she listened eagerly. There was something about her that kept drawing him towards her. Sunfall had observed many romantic relationships during his time on earth, but never experienced love before. One starry night, Starwind approached him and confessed her feelings, and Sunfall found himself returning her affection. The two of them became a couple and after only a few months, their first nest of hatchlings opened their eyes to the world. Together with their hatchlings, Sunfall and Starwind founded a clan to provide a welcoming and loving home for their family and all those that might join in the future.

But the peace should not last forever.

One day, a clan of Centaurs attacked the clan without a warning. They were led by one centaur with white hair and a black body, her eyes burning with steely determination. She and her clan wielded strange, dark magic, unknown to even Sunfall. Their advance was quick and merciless. To save his clan and children, Sunfall had no choice but to meet them on the battlefield. This was just what the dark mages had wanted. They had observed Sunfall and his powers and were eager to steal his sun-kissed scales to grant themselves great, god-like powers. While most of the attackers kept Sunfall occupied with their attacks, their leader readied a devastating attack that would freeze Sunfall and allow them to carry out their plan.

They almost succeeded, but Starwind was watching the fight from afar. She rushed over and threw herself into the mage’s attack. Immediately, her body turned into shimmering jade. When Sunfall realized what had happened, his sorrow and anger lashed out, bringing his enemies down with arrows and bolts made of pure light. None of the attackers survived that day.

Heartbroken and grieving, Sunfall carried the statue that once had been his beloved to a mountain top. For many days he stayed there, hoping she would return. But she was gone. Eventually, he returned to his clan. He watched over his children, their children, and their ancestors for many centuries. But every night, he’d return to the statue of Starwind, singing her songs in his soft voice, and watching the stars move on the firmament.

Thick clouds covered the night sky. Moon and stars lay hidden behind them, their silvery light swallowed by the impervious blanket. The only source of light fighting against the darkness was a small, golden orb that flew right next to Sunfall's head. Its cone illuminated the mountain top, falling softly on Starwind's ossified features. The reflections on the jade surface gave the illusion of her eyes glistering.
Sunfall closed his eyes. A knot formed on his chest like it always did when he came here. Even after all this time, after all this years… it still hurt. Countless times he had tried to bring her back. He had used his powers, the powers of a god if the stories were to be believed, in any way that had come to his mind. Still, nothing. Not a single sign of life, of his beloved still being there. Only deadly silence.

The pressure on his chest grew as he thought of all the attempts he had made in vain. Warm tears started trickling down his cheeks, causing a small spark of light where they hit the ground. Sunfall opened his eyes again. Through the shroud of tears, he looked at Starwind's statue, as though an intense stare would bring her back. But there was no use.

Ten years. Today was the tenth anniversary of his last failed attempt. Ever since then, he had not been able to think of any new approaches he could try. For ten years, his mind had been a blank slate.

A low sob escaped his chest when it cramped. "I am sorry", he whispered, searching for Starwind's lifeless gaze. "I have failed you. I promised we'd be together forever and… I was not able to keep that promise. I… am a disappointment. What kind of god am I that can't even…" His voice died down. His heart ached. It was useless. Hopeless… Senseless. He leaned his forehead against the cold jade surface of what once had been his mate, unable to hold back the tears that were now running across his face as a never-ending stream.
His sobbing grew louder as the pressure on his heart rose. Powerlessly, he sank to the ground. He had lost her. Lost… The word echoed in his mind. There was an endless life before him, an endless life without her. He had no strength anymore, allowed pain and sorrow to consume him for this moment. A scream escaped his lungs, losing itself in the emptiness. Small projectiles of light buzzed out into the darkness as Sunfall let loose both his emotions and his powers. The projectiles grew quickly, large bolts of light and energy shooting from Sunfall's scales. The sky above the mountaintop turned as bright as day; a crackle filled the air. Sunfall did not care.

A sudden sound of impact jolted him up. His eyes flew open, but he only caught a glimpse of the jade statue before it vanished off the cliff. For the blink of an eye, Sunfall was frozen. Then he dashed forward, throwing himself off the edge of the cliff. His gaze was glued to the statue falling in front of him. He pressed his wings to his body to gain more speed. His heartbeat filled his ears, loud and hasty. Still, it was not loud enough to drown out the crashing and breaking of the jade as it hit the stony ground below.

"NO!" Sunfall's voice ripped through the silence that followed the crash. His wings snapped open on their own accord, catching him midair. He could just stare at the remains of the statue, scattered on the foot of the mountain.

But even before Sunfall's mind fully grasped what had happened, before his heart broke for good, a movement below caught his attention. In the middle of the jade fragments, a single star started glowing softly. It was joined by a second one, a third, until an entire constellation formed before Sunfall's eyes. It was glowing in a silvery light, almost as though it seeked to replace the night sky that was still covered by thick clouds.

Sunfall couldn't help but stare, hypnotized by the softly glowing patterns. Suddenly, they started moving. A figure rose from the debris, a dragon of delicate and regal statue. Gently, she folded her glistering wings on her starry back. She wavered slightly, like a hatchling that just had broken free from her eggshell. But then, she turned her head skywards. Her golden eyes met those of Sunfall, she smiled. His heart stumbled, his wings started shaking. Starwind's appearance had changed, yet her smile was still the same.

The life of a god is a curious one.
eternity turns like a grandfather clock-
one effortless tick at a time,
and he stands just beneath the arm,
listening to it gong.
once in a while someone else steps into
the clock with him,
but they'll never understand how it works.
the mechanisms are just too high to see
and he can't explain how he can feel the
whirring of the cogs in his own veins like blood-
time is an essence, a necessity, a drug,
and he breathes it like a song.

he never gets used to it either.
like walking, once learned, existing is no more
difficult than breathing-
it needs no thought, no effort.
he need only focus on the relationships around him.
his warmth draws them in and he's grateful for it-
how else would he heal them?
for he knows things they can never know-
he can sense the makings of the universe
when he sleeps. his dreams are puff and stardust-
little meaning, and deep hurt.

she is leaving soon. perhaps not soon in her mind-
she believes that she has years, centuries.
but he knows the truth.
that a century is but a blip on the timestamp of the world.
her existence in inconsequential-
his love means nothing to death, who comes and goes
without discrimination.
he can provide her with the energy and power of a burning sun
but he cannot gift her immortality.

the days are all the same now.
he watches the sun scrape across the sky with tired, tired eyes.
every moment is a mystery but so too is the others-
he is not the same as them, but he loves them, too-
so fragile, so delicate, so lost.
chasing after satisfaction like gleeful children.
he treats them like family, he holds them dear to his heart,
and near to him, and he would die for them-

but he cannot, he cannot. he cannot.

he is a furnace, a bonfire, a ghost.
his everything is power, his reach is nothing-
he breathes and the world goes on.
but they will not go on forever and so he is forced to
stay in the moment.
else he might dream forever, of what things
could have been.
