INFORMATION

The Lightning Dancer is not affiliated with my main clan's lore, and most of my dragons either have no idea she exists or believe her to be a fairy tale. But she is quite real -- and you can use her in your lore, too. She was originally created as a convenient NPC for some lore commissions, and if you're interested in including her in your own stories, you can view more information about her and post in this thread here.
For stories about the Lightning Dancer, see below -- I highly recommend Haimona's lore as it currently has the most detailed description of her.

» ENCOUNTERS: Cecil, Haimona, Katsura, Maike
Includes lore written by other players.

THE LEGEND
It's called the Shifting Expanse for a reason. Beyond the Lightning dragons' cities, the desert stretches into a pale void so empty it baffles even the most sophisticated equipment. Explorers swear that the landscape changes with every blink and makes navigation impossible. Many have been lost here. Some have surely perished.

The Lightning Dancer is not among them. Nobody knows how old she is. Tales of her are told in whispers; she is more like a spirit than the oracle she claims she is. Is she as old as the stories make her out to be, or have they been confused with stories of different dragons from more baffling lands? No one can say for sure.

What is certain is that she knows much. With her peculiar magic, she can divine the answers to most questions that are brought to her. She never asks for payment -- in this, she is merciful. She understands that navigating the ever-changing dunes, braving the heat and thirst in daylight and the freezing cold at night, are payment enough for those who seek her out.

There are many ways to find her. The most common involves finding a map and a list of instructions, a mirage-like pathway to her home. Her domain is surrounded by blindingly white dunes. Here, rusting juggernauts heave from the sand like whales from a frozen sea -- look for the crag of night-black stone. At its base is an opening large enough to admit an Imperial. The way down is claustrophobic and crooked, and eventually supplicants emerge into an underground cavern dominated by a shallow pool. Lights glint upon the rocky surfaces of the cavern...and then one realizes they are monitors, lenses, the glow of static-filled screens and camera lights.

The witch will reveal herself soon enough. She is patient, very patient, and will aid you if she wishes....Or if she decides she dislikes you, she will wink out like a lightbulb, leaving you with nothing but your frustration and the dark.

Whether or not she helps you, the end result is the same. Soon she will vanish, and the screens and cameras, too, will retreat into the walls. Behind you, light will beckon from outside, drawing you back into the world. You will have been changed by your encounter: Months might have passed while you spent hours in the darkness, or you might discover new magic flowing through your blood. Your business with the Lightning Dancer is complete, and you're now ready to proceed on your way.

THE ORACLE
The oracle is as dark as a stormcloud, her face as grim. As she moves, mysterious lights twinkle just beneath her hide. Many say that these are signs of her magic. Others swear that she is actually a machine, or partly one, and the lights embedded in her flesh are wiring and circuitry. Her voice, too, is disconcerting. She speaks in a whisper that crackles like static. Sometimes she laughs, but it's not much better; it sounds like white noise crackling through a radio.

Despite her eerie appearance and the harshness of her territory, the Lightning Dancer is not unkind. Often her greeting to visitors includes an invitation to drink from the pool and rest. She will listen sympathetically to petitions and queries. She does not, however, have any patience for those who try to intimidate her, who bluster and threaten her for knowledge she would otherwise freely give. Many find themselves grating at her cynicism. She is not without a sense of humor, but her wry, sardonic wit tends to frustrate other beings, who feel that they are being toyed with. Once the visitor's need is ascertained, however, she speaks concisely and clearly. Her instructions are always straight to the point, though her mystic methods are baffling, even to experienced thaumaturgists.

On the subject of gifts: She never demands anything from questors, since there have been cases when visitors tried to bribe her for more favorable "prophecies" (missing the point entirely -- she interprets outcomes; she does not create them). But gifts presented appropriately never go amiss. She tends to look at the spirit of the gift, not its cost or nature. If pressed, she will admit that the most useful presents are food and drink, and tools for maintaining her lair.

Her hobbies and interests are unknown -- let alone what she does when not speaking with visitors. She uses her surveillance equipment to keep watch over her territory, but that is all. It is through other means -- pure magic -- that she seeks the answers her guests need to hear, and she may also track them for some time after they have gone -- out of curiosity, if nothing else.
