Starlight found his charge the day he left home on his quest-a small forest by the edge of a cliff. He was barely an adult. Four days later a forest fire razed the entire area. Heartbroken, Starlight left the ruins of his charge to seek a new one, too ashamed to return home, despite the fact that there was nothing he could have done to save his charge. While wandering, he met Roots, the loner fae, and they lived together for some time. The two became very close, so close that everyone who saw them assumed they were mates-and, in a way, that's true, but there is nothing romantic between the two of them. They share a deep and abiding platonic love, which was what first saved Starlight from his own guilt. They had a nest together, and Starlight was happy, but Roots was not, and they ended their romantic engagement, remaining extremely close. Their only daughter, a little fae they named Darling, grew up close to both her parents. When Starlight met Burst, he felt he had a purpose in life again, and after Darling was born, he knew he had a new charge-taking care of the outcasts he and Roots take in. Each and every dragon in the clan is known to Starlight, and he considers them all friends, though the sentiment might not be mutual. Starlight has taken on the clan and the land they live on as his charge. At first he struggled to deal with the transient nature of the clan, as members would join and leave or adventure on their own at their leisure. He still worries every time someone leaves their clan territory, but Starlight knows that part of being their guardian is protecting their freedom. Around his neck, Starlight wears a silver amulet that was given to him by the Windsinger himself-but it was far from a gift. A mutated dragon trained into a mindless killing machine named Hound answers only to the dragon who bears the amulet, and the gods chose Starlight to wield this dangerous weapon, because of his honesty and dedication to his charge. Hound is a cause of endless concern for Starlight-the creature has no will of his own. Without Starlight telling him to eat and drink, Hound will sit contentedly and starve. The guardian has spent more than a century trying to find some flicker of life in Hound, and he wonders if he's been fooling himself, but he's sure that there's something there, under the blankness. He isn't going to give up. Starlight is more or less in charge of admissions-that is, he decides who can officially join the clan. He's known for being very lenient with his decisions, as Starlight wants to protect and save everyone. He was once a warrior, but he passed on the job of defending the clan to younger dragons some time ago, though Starlight is no pushover. |
