I.
“It’s time.” Creambean’s eyes flashed. The summer sun glistered, a bright orange halo behind her. “I can teach you no more.”
The Spiral hefted her bow.
Ryder felt his heart catch. “I’m not ready!”
“If I say you are —“ Cream nocked an arrow, and cocked an eyebrow. “You’re ready.”
The arrow shot through the sunlight, a bolt of gold. Fast as a flash, Ryder hurled himself to the grassy ground.
The arrow struck an old oak behind him — thunk — and drove half the shaft into the wood.
Cream’s melodic laugh rang over the training field. When Ryder peered through his talons, Cream’s eyes twinkled down at him. Warmth, merriment, and kindness.
She touched a talon to his forehead. “Your choice must be made soon.”
“I’ve already made my choice.” Ryder got to his feet and dusted himself off, trying to look dignified as befitted a knight.
Cream waited.
Ryder met her gaze. For some reason, the words were hard to say. “I want to stay. This is my home.”
Was it his imagination, or did she look relieved?
“Very good. In that case — you can have today off. Tomorrow, at dawn.” She tapped an arrow against his armor.
“At dawn?”
“We have others to train,” she laughed. And just like that, Ryder’s place in the clan was cemented.
II.
Most of the dragons trained under Creambean’s auspices leave to serve the deity. Quietly, tacitly, the clan elders pray that the sacrifices will call down the favor of the Gladekeeper and shield them from the dark.
They know that not all evil in the world can be explained — but that doesn’t stop them from praying, hoping, and sending warriors to serve the deity in her unfathomable war.
When it came time for Ryder to join the others among the ranks of exaltation, something stopped him. He looked back at the clan and felt something inside his chest. A warmth, a kindness, and a feeling of protection. He knew then that the Gladekeeper had called him to keep her children safe, and not to join her own ranks.
Ryder has never seen a Ravager with his own eyes. But the shadowy beings are woven into the fabric of the clan, like a thread of obsidian in a tapestry of gold.
He sees their ink-dark echo in the eyes of the elders. He hears them in Cream’s voice every time she trains young dragons.
And he feels them in the shadows that come at night.
But Ryder will be ready. With a heart as pure and tempered as sword-steel, he waits for the day he prays will never come.
