In her heyday, long before Abyssal Aurora's integration, Ryarkini was a terror of the seas. Her name was only spoken in hushed whispers on the mainland, lest the sound somehow draw her attention to the speaker's shorelines. At the helm of the ship Bloodthirsty Scarab, she reigned above Sornieth's coastal oceans, descending upon valuable merchant ships with ruthless ferocity and efficiency matched only by Direfleet's own ruler Sengka. Rumors abounded that the salt-matted Tundra could face down a Ridgeback with no hesitation -- and win. Nicknames followed in her wake everywhere. White Wraith. Salt Ghoul. Icewarden's Executioner. For decades, her activities helped keep Direfleet's stores full, and more than a few clan members can count their arrival as a direct result of her maritime prowess. But every warrior eventually meets its match. The Bloodthirsty Scarab had been skulking near the shores of the Scarred Wasteland, a territory usually given a wide berth for the savagery of many of its inhabitants. But Ryarkini's usual quarry was beginning to wisen up to her tactics. Ships trading along the open water routes between the Southern Icefield and mainland Sornieth (her favorite hunting ground) had started to hire escort ships crewed by battle-hardened mercenaries to ensure their cargo arrived intact. Even the ones from more trusting and combat-soft territories were now traveling with powerful scrying mages, often Water dragons who could alter the currents and courses long before Ryarkini could pick up their scent. Pickings were becoming unacceptably slim among the other ships, and the bold Tundra captain would not see her home suffer resource shortages if she had any say in the matter. Carefully, their vessel crept along the coastline, hunting between the typical Plague warships for a craft small enough that they could stand a reasonable chance in combat. After nearly two weeks of laying low, they found their mark: a smaller, shorter-distance vessel bound for the Starfall Isles. Anticipating an easy fight, the Bloodthirsty Scarab charged headlong into what would turn out to be its downfall. The fight started out well, at first. The Bloodthirsty Scarab caught up to its quarry effortlessly, and as dragons took to the air to bombard their opponents, the advantage seemed to swing to Ryarkini's crew of diverse elements. The mostly Plague crew, taken by surprise, could only fire off several bolts of magic and ballistae as they fumbled for their weapons. Ryarkini herself descended shortly after, claws and fangs crusted in frost and muscles rippling in anticipation. Soon enough, though, her roared challenge was answered by a foe she did not expect. Out from the deck below slithered the largest Imperial she'd ever laid eyes on, battle-scarred, bristling with bloodlust, and proudly bearing the banner of captain over his tattered wings. Her intuitive enemy made her as the opposing captain quicker than she could blink, and before she could take to the air or drop into a defensive stance, the colossal viper struck. Ryarkini will never admit that it was sheer luck that kept her out of the Imperial's maw at first. Adrenaline burst through her veins as she felt scale brush narrowly against fur, and the Tundra whirled to latch onto the enemy captain's face. Years of past experience rushed through her mind like water coursing down a mountain. Go for the eyes. A blinded enemy cannot hope to hit a moving target much smaller than itself. Her claws desperately sought purchase between the giant scales and fur tufts. A haggard cry tore from her throat, demanding that any of her larger crewmates come to her aid. None proved swift enough. As one of her back legs raked at her foe's sanguine eye, the limb slipped down just a bit too far. All it took was a simple tilt of the Imperial's head, and then pain. Fangs laced with putrid venom punctured through her fur and skin like paper. Titanic jaw force snapped her bones like matchsticks. Disease poured into her bloodstream, ferried to her every extremity by her frantic heart. She could only scream, but the forceful impact of her body into the splintered wood of the deck slammed her breath out of her lungs. The Imperial pressed his paw onto her chest, caging her with his cracked claws, and roared his triumph. "Retreat", he commanded. Let us be on our way, he boomed, and I will not end your sniveling captain's life here." Shaken to see their leader brought to her knees, they obeyed and began their swift retreat home. The on-board healers could only do so much. Ryarkini's leg bones had shattered far beyond what a field splint could hold together. Even mere hours after the injury, flesh began to show signs of necrosis. Whatever potent cocktail of pestilence had taken root in her bloodstream wouldn't respond to the herbs and potions on hand. It left her muscles constantly tense with pain, her brain racked with seizures. All the crew could do was bring her water and food when she felt strong enough to keep anything down, and give her strips of leather to bite when her seizures came. By the time the Bloodthirsty Scarab docked in Garwater Harbor again, a Guardian was already prepared to airlift her to Golden Oak Medical, where surgeons and potionmasters stood ready to aid Direfleet's fallen provider. It took weeks before they finally concocted a solution to neutralize the disease within her, but only a few hours to determine that her leg was unsalvageable. When she finally returned to her residence after so long away, it was with one peg leg and a severely weakened body. The disease had damaged her severely, impacting her coordination and stiffening her every movement (though it hadn't impacted her temper in any way). She nearly tore up half of her belongings when Sengka personally delivered the news that the Bloodthirsty Scarab would be placed out of commission until a suitable replacement captain could be found, and that Ryarkini was to assume command of the arena. Her new position was a mixed blessing, in her opinion. Being in command of something and being allowed to flex her temper seemed to keep her out of depression, but despair still flickered behind her eyes during every battle she watched. She truly, deeply missed the exhilaration of battle. There's fury and fire in those eyes now. Abyssal Aurora's integration heralded the captain Sengka desired, it seemed, and the Bloodthirsty Scarab was soon awarded to Maeveret and her small band of followers. That ship was one of Direfleet's proudest vessels. No way in hell would Ryarkini stand by quietly and allow it to fall into the claws of an outsider. No. If it took all the strength she had left in her body, Ryarkini would get her ship back. Somehow... |
