Biography
Away, hidden in his cavern of experiments, Torben had run into an issue. He had been trying to merge magic with electricity, to create golems that were powered by the merest spark and could preform laborious tasks. The Stormcatcher could still yell at his workers, but no longer would they be dragons. Longer would it be Torben.
His final attempt at crashing the two energies together into a husk of gears and cores backfired. Torben awoke long after the explosion, finding that his body had fused with the machine. And the electricity. The Spiral panicked and fled from the Expanse, flying right into a storm covering the border to Light territory. Torben crash landed in the Ruins after his body attracted the force of a lightning bolt. The dazed dragon-slash-machine was found by the Scout Aloisia and brought to the Vanguard.
Catherine's corner of the large, crumbling structures was his first stop.
Curse
Torben convinced himself that whatever had happened in his cave was the result of a curse. Stormcatcher had taken notice of his subject's disdain and had reacted. Reacted by making him become the creature that was destined to do nothing but work.
This was why Torben was convinced that the supposed Witch Doctor of the new clan he had awoken in would be his savior.
He was not properly prepared when he entered her small hut that did not fit well amidst the rest of the ruins. A bones- and tatters-cladded giant towered in the middle of the dark, one-room house. Torben quelled his fears as best he could and begged the Guardian to rid him of his curse.
"You have no curse."
The Spiral tried his best to refuse the thought that crossed his mind. He would not be stuck like this.
Seasons spent within the Vanguard led to the Pearlcatcher Shaman, Merrial, finally working up the guts to formally ask Torben to be the Lightning Representative on the Vanguard's Council. While Torben did not think fondly of Stormcatcher, his fellow Lightning dragons he felt nothing but pity for. Anything he could do to help them and fix their inner urge to do nothing but work, Torben would gladly do.
Still, when meetings between the Council were over, Torben swept himself away to indulge in his studies. The Imperial Calliope brought him what books she could; she translated the old texts when needed. Torben found nothing, and became more and more depressed as the fact sunk in that he would be stuck his way.
Torben tried to use the same magic that he had learned as a young qit to hide himself, ashamed of the body. While his organic flesh would blink away, his mechanical parts remained visible and still moved as he did.
At the very least, it was a fun party trick.
Stormcatcher, himself, must have found it the most amusing.
