Lore below by saltedsnails
The clan was... smaller when I joined, but even so, it was still was quite the shock for me.
I mean, how else am I supposed to react? I was born in the Tangled Wood, specifically the Foxfire Brambles, so most of my every-day outside view consisted of barely being able to see from wingtip to wingtip, sad but insanely tough brambles that seem to exist purely to stab every living thing in the nearby vicinity, along with it being incredibly claustrophobic, and not the greatest for hatchlings' soft, new skin. It's not too bad, it's really safe... as long as you ignore the brambles.
Most of my formative years were spent there, so it grew... dull. Duller than it already was. Then one thing led to another, and I was off to the Gladekeeper's lands; the Viridian Labyrinth. The name was a bit scary, I must admit, but... I couldn't wait! From what I had heard, everything was different! No worries of feathers being caught on every corner, no stumbling over things that would've been obvious in any other place, nothing like that!
When I actually got there, however... I was confused. Beyond confused. It really lived up to its name... I was there for only two seconds, and had somehow already gotten lost amongst those draping vines and winding streams. My birth home was even more confusing, yes, and much more cramped, but I had grown used to it. Hide and Seek was still a chore there, though. But here? It's a whole new world.
It was certainly beautiful; if a dragon told me the leaves, with the sun shining through them, were actually crystals, I would have completely believed them. However, beauty is a teensy, tiny thing in the face of fear. In such an alien place... I may have been excited and all giddy about coming here, but right now? Yes, in summary, the prettiness pales in comparison.
After a while of stumbling, and generally getting lost, I found an open space in this hugely ridiculous, overgrown greenhouse, along with a couple of dragons. Many, many different dragons. Of all different shapes and sizes, of all species and colours. It was a bit painful for me; after all, I had grown up with barely being able to see myself, let alone other dragons next to me. All colours were dull there; and now? being hit by literal rainbows made of scales, fur and feathers? Ouch.
But what really, really caught my eye, what really made me want to join in on that happy clearing, join in with those dragons? The hatchlings. No doubt about it.
Personally, I've always loved hatchlings, but they always had to be hidden away when I lived in the Foxfire Brambles; only able to come out when they were bigger, with tougher skin. Only the elders, or the hatchlings' mothers were allowed to go where they were. So actually seeing hatchlings, in all their adorable, shiny glory? Amazing. Totally worth getting lost and panicking over even the smallest unfamiliar bug... which was all of them.
So, I stumbled in on that clearing with a purpose. And by Shadowbinder, it was one of the best choices I had ever made. The only choice that tops it? To become a 'gene-giver' of the clan. Sometimes the other clan members pity me, or glorify me for choosing this path of life.
Though it means I may never be able to find that special one, to be a mother of so many, and be able to see them and proudly that those are my hatchlings? To be able to watch them grow, to be able to encourage them, to be able to watch them lead a life bathed in the sun? Nothing can compare, their pity is unneeded.
I must admit, however, that their pride in me is quite nice. I won't ever reject that, no.
... I was devastated when I heard about what happened to Birdyell. Poor Cowbell refused to move for days when he and the others were given the news, but he had to when Andrew decided we all had to migrate for safer lands; in fear of the terrible Emperor, and of what further deaths it could cause to the clan. He chose the Earthshaker's lands; the Dragonhome.
Since I'm not too ridiculously far from home, I still keep in touch with my birth family; my parents, and my brother, Carlos. My other two siblings were sent off, exalted, much like Birdyell. Hopefully, however, they do not share the same fate as her...
Things are going well. And I hope they continue to go well tomorrow, the next day, and every day following that. My hatchlings, and both of my families are safe; what could go wrong?
