Humor

When he is described, the word most often used is charming. His youthful appearance implies a certain naivety, and belies the composure and casual confidence with which he conducts himself. Beneath these traits are disguised the conniving machinations of a wickedly intelligent and ruthlessly cunning king. In a way, every part of him he shows to the world is manipulative, from his play at innocence to his careless vanity.

Those who know him well think him mischievous and remarkably kind for the man he lets the world know.

Epoch

p. 1
In high summer there was born the second son of the emperor Domitian, with skin like sun-baked clay and hair of darkest midnight, and the name given to him was Nephrim. He was raised in shelter within an empire of rot, garnished in silk and jewels upon a marble perch overlooking a sea of gore and conquest. The father whom he was meant to admire paid him no more mind than he might a single cloud in an empty sky. Mausolos, his brother, strong and vast as a mountain, became the pillar on which he drew his strength. Their mother, wise and kind, was his sanctuary.

p. 2
A perilous magic slept in his veins. Their mother spoke of it in whispers where no one could hear, clutching bruises into his wrists as she did. Some ancient enigma, neither good nor evil, neither kind nor malicious, took refuge in his being. As a child, this fearsome magic seemed only to be a curse. He must always contain himself, never lose his sense of being, lest it wake.

p. 3
Death plucked their mother from them and after their father fell into a most heinous madness. Perhaps they did too. Nephrim was too young to shoulder the burdens thrust upon him, and yet too old to claim ignorance and innocence. They committed sins, in the days that followed their mother's death. Two brothers, ever sullied by things that can never be seen by respectable eyes. At times, he thinks it would have been better to have blood on his hands.

p. 4
Mausolos and Nephrim. Separate, but only in physical form. Jagged pieces that were not meant to fit, splintered and broken until there was barely a seam between them. The world turned a blind eye, and so it went on.

p. 5
Domitian, their emperor and father, died. There was no mourning. In his wake he left a kingdom of ash and bone, a graveyard populated by a people waiting to die. Only ghosts drifted through the wasteland, husks of living beings waiting to decay. Mausolos believed that they could rebuild it all. Nephrim knew better. Let us start anew, he declared. Pride tore the brothers apart, as in death, their father wrought one last destruction upon them.

p. 6
A divide rent them in two, and with them, the very people they sought to protect. Nephrim led the ones who followed across the vast ocean to a land of sand and storms, where they would mark foundations and begin from nothing as if the empire of the past had never been.

p. 7
Yet, fate had one more cruel trick to play. On the journey from his homeland to his future, Nephrim grew heavy with child. There was promise of a full nest, five children all waiting to be welcomed into the world. But as the first bricks of the kingdom were laid, in his arms there were only two. In the palace depths, far below the lowest basement, rested three small graves.

p. 8
The prince's soul had been tarnished long ago, yet with this great loss it fell further into darkness. From the cracks in his heart came the wondering purr of that ancient magic his mother had tried so hard to teach him to disguise. If it was a beast, then Nephrim would be its tamer, for in the vast desert there was only himself to rely upon. He cloaked his fragile heart behind shining gold and deadly claws, and killed the last of the boy he had once been.

p. 9
Khepra, the Kingdom of the Fallen Sun. Vast and beautiful. Vicious and enchanting. His pride and joy.

p. 10
When at last his brother spoke with him again, both princes had become kings, and Mausolos stood beneath the banner of a new empire; Janus. He extended his hand, an offer to reconcile, but it was not to be. For Mausolos was an emperor, as their father before him, and could think only of joining Khepra within the vastness of his own domain.
"Please brother, join us. We'll be together. Like before."

p. 11
How could he have asked that of him? To give away his kingdom would be to say that all he had sacrificed had been for naught. Did Mausolos wish only to swallow his accomplishments, display them as his own? Act as if all had been but a petty dispute, easily overwritten? Was he meant to be ursurped by the brother who could still not see him as a king?

p. 12
Never.

p. 13
A squabble became a battle. A battle became a war. Neither brother would bend, neither faction would yield. And so, the seasons turn, and the years become decades. The graves between the kingdoms span valleys. Janus and Khepra stand opposed.

p. 14
Mausolos and Nephrim. Separate, stretched over mountains, prairies and seas. That distance, it kills them slowly.

Trivia

☀ Since the divide was formed, Nephrim has never once been with a man. He cannot stand the thought. Instead, he has his harem; beautiful, wily women all unique and remarkable in their own ways. They warm his bed, so he need not acknowledge the emptiness inside him, and the children they bear him fill the void in his lonely heart. Like this, he can live pretending that he does not feel as if he has been torn in two. But, even he knows he cannot live like that forever.

☀ During eclipses, he and Mausolos are drawn together. They reunite, like the sun and moon, who can only meet when the entirety of the universe aligns. Until the stars pass over them again, they are one. All is forgotten; the war, their anger, the sorrow they've caused one another and the secrets they continue to keep. It is only them, two halves of one ink-black soul. Then the sun returns and they are divided once more.

☀ Artisans of Khepra all long for the day that their Monarch will commission them to craft the likeness of his favorite figure, the man they believe to be the embodiment of the Sun God. He is a figure with whom Nephrim is obsessed, always commissioning new works of this powerful and brutal man to adorn the innermost walls of his palace. No one is sure where he keeps much of the works he orders, only that he pays handsomely for the efforts. Few know the truth; that the man is no god at all, but the very image of Mausolos.
