THE SEARCH FOR A KING
(TW: Animal Death)

ㅤㅤㅤBefore the creation of humans, only animals roamed the lands. These animals, while intelligent, were plagued with their animal instincts and bodies, stuck in their cycles of predator and prey. Etheria took note of the disarray of the animals and decided that they were in need of a leader. A king to rule over the animals and bring them out of their endless cycle of violence. So, she went to each group of animals and told them to select a champion to represent their group, and there would be a challenge to determine who was worthy of the title.
ㅤㅤㅤA few days later, the selected champions came to the site of the challenge along the beach. Among the chosen were the parrot, the panther, the bison, the tortoise, the coyote, the frog, the bear, the shark, the monkey, the deer, the snake, the mouse, the iguana, and the rabbit. Each contestant had their own merits that Etheria thought would make a fine ruler of the animals. But she would have to test them for their worthiness of any throne.
ㅤㅤㅤThe challenge was one of a simple obstacle course. The contestants would run along the beach, then swim to an island not too far off the shore, grab a colorful stone hidden somewhere on the island, swim back, and run through the dense forest towards the final goal. Easy enough on the surface.
The animals all lined up, ready to try their hand at winning the crown. Etheria gave her signal, and the contestants were off.
ㅤㅤㅤThe panther made the best time initially, but began to slow down and whine about the sand getting stuck in her paws. This gave the deer his time to get ahead and take the lead. Soon after them came the shark, who was swimming in the waters along the shore, and the parrot, who flew overhead. Soon behind them, the monkey, the coyote, the rabbit, and the iguana. At the slower end, there was the bison, who had to build up momentum for a charge, as well as the smaller animals: the frog, the tortoise, the snake, and the mouse. The bear meandered about in last, admiring the scenery and not really paying attention to the task at hand.
ㅤㅤㅤThe deer reached the water, and was significantly slowed down by his inability to swim. He kept his head above the water, but wasn’t very fast. The panther took this opportunity to take the lead back, with her powerful legs. But it was short lived, as the shark sped ahead towards the island even faster than the two of them. The parrot flew overhead once more. The smaller animals who weren’t so confident in their ability to swim stayed ashore, unsure of what to do, until they saw the bison entering the water. They hopped upon his back and took advantage of the free ride, to the bison’s mild annoyance. That left the coyote, the monkey, the tortoise, the snake, and the bear. The coyote and the monkey decided to face their fears and just make a dive for it and swim. The tortoise did the same, however, the tortoise could not swim. He only floated. The current drew him farther and farther out and out, farther and farther away from the shore, and he perished. That was one contestant out of the race. The bear finally made it to the shore, and the snake asked politely if she could ride upon the bear’s back, and the bear lazily approved. They trekked the rough waters together. However, the snake had the sudden and uncontrollable urge to betray the bear last-minute, and kill them to eliminate them from the competition. Just as they were getting close, she got herself poised to strike, but left herself vulnerable to the waves. She was knocked off and drowned, and the bear didn’t even notice.
ㅤㅤㅤThe shark circled around the island to find his stone, while the panther and the parrot made contact with the shore and started searching for theirs. The bison came ashore, with all the creatures he was carrying as well. They all started searching for their own stones. The shark saw his stone hidden among the ferns near the shore, and hopped up onto land to get it. However, he quickly realized that this competition was rigged against him all along. He couldn’t get back in the water. The iguana, also in the area, noticed the shark’s plight, and stood and watched.
ㅤㅤㅤThe shark begged, “Help me, please. I don’t want to die here.”
ㅤㅤㅤThe iguana, skeptical, replied; “How do I know you won’t eat me?”
ㅤㅤㅤThe shark begged once more. “I want to live more than anything.”
ㅤㅤㅤThe iguana still had her doubts, but went to go help the shark. Unfortunately, the shark could not control his instinct. He ate her. He berated himself for his mistake. How could he have been so foolish? He flopped and flopped, but it was no use. He suffocated. Meanwhile, panther and parrot were still looking, unfortunately in the same area. Parrot was preoccupied, looking for his stone on the ground. Panther couldn’t control herself. She pounced, and the parrot was another unfortunate victim. Bison, mouse, and frog had found their stones, and bison was getting ready to leave. Panther was still stuck in an uncontrollable desire to hunt and kill. She saw bison leaving the island. Bison was already struggling with the stone he was carrying as well as the animals. Panther leaped and attacked bison. A badly timed move. The current picked up, and swept them all underwater. Frog decided to take her chances and swim by herself, hoping she could make it back. The others though- panther, bison, and mouse- were all lost to the current. By this point, coyote, monkey, deer, and bear were finally on the island. Deer collapsed from exhaustion, unable to continue. Bear just kept on meandering, looking at the fruits and berries the island had to offer. Coyote saw deer and couldn’t resist taking advantage of an opportunity. She ate him. Monkey started searching along with bear. Rabbit, for better or for worse, had missed the bison ride back to shore. He took his stone, and took the risk of swimming, but he was far too small. He did not make it. Monkey, bear, and coyote found their stones and tried to go back to shore. Monkey was struggling, as was coyote. Monkey decided to sacrifice coyote to get ahead. They pushed themselves further using coyote as leverage, and coyote succumbed to the waves.
ㅤㅤㅤEtheria could already tell this competition was a lot more distressing than she bargained for. She began to feel guilty for the animals who were dying at the hands of her competition.
Bear, monkey, and frog made it back to shore. Frog, unfortunately, didn’t last long. Her skin didn’t react well to the salt of the ocean. She passed away. All that was left was monkey and bear.
Monkey charged ahead, climbing a tree. The end was in sight for them. They turned back to bear and sneered. “It is me and me alone who will rule over all. If only you weren’t so lazy, maybe you’d be able to get ahead.”
ㅤㅤㅤ“Maybe,” said the bear.
ㅤㅤㅤThe monkey’s expression turned around. The bear wasn’t affected by their taunts. The monkey began to become paranoid. What if the bear had some secret plan to kill them? What if they’re about to do something wrong? The monkey started to panic. They needed to kill the bear. At any cost. They shook around in the tree, which was already decayed and fragile, and got it to tip over. But monkey was on the wrong side of the tree. The crash killed both the bear and the monkey.
ㅤㅤㅤEtheria looked upon the scene. She was horrified. She had caused this. This was her fault. She brought up the animals’ spirits from their bodies and apologized. She understood now that to assign a leader to a group so different and polarized would be too difficult to determine for what it was worth. She promised them an even greater honor, though. She set their souls free, into the skies. As they ascended, they made their apologies to each other, now unblinded by their lack of an animal body and instincts to control them. Each animal became its own constellation, and now forever watches over the world.
