Biography

xxxxx
XIII Born unlucky.

xxx
Everyone knew of the witch in the woods.

No one talked about it, not in the earshot of the hatchlings. (And even when they did, when they were sure the children with such curious ears were sound asleep, it was only in whispers.)

She was an Emperor - or no, even worse, some said.

She was part of the Shade, others thought.

She was a menace, a beast, a killer out for blood - and all anyone could agree on was that. (There was evidence in every body. Some things don't need to be dissented.)

The problem was, you see, when you're vague enough of warning danger, when you bring it up just enough that children know of it and not enough that children can truly understand it, then you've simply created a bogeyman.

Only some children were afraid of those.

████

This is what I can tell you.

This time, the rumours may just be right. This time, there really is a monster in the woods - and this time, just once, the monster does mean harm.

This is not true in every case, and it will not be true in the next.

A child wanders into the forest, with dreams of being a hero. A child walks steps off the beaten path, and is determined to slay a witch.

We need not speculate the reasons why she was out alone that night.

The witch will not be killed that night, nor many more after that. Neither will the child.

Instead, the witch looks at the tiny hatchling before her, nothing but fluff and eyes (and eyes, and eyes) and laughs. She tells the child to go home - but what home is there for her to go?

The hatchling cannot leave until she has slayed the dragon. So she learns from the best, and the dragon teaches her how to slay, in her stead.

Can you tell where this story is going?

Seasons pass. The hatchling grows
and grows
and grows.

Her horns are long, now. Sharp and jagged, jutting proud like tines of antlers. Her claws are deadly, now. Whetted from years of hard work, honed into blades. Her eyes glare from under her mane. She fights fearlessly, ferociously, and she no longer thinks of finding home.

Has she not, after all, already found it? There are two witches in the woods now, and all is as it ever should be.

But it can't end here.

The beast she now considered mother could never stop battling - and surely, neither could she.

It is not the same clan that they find themselves in. She does not recognise any of these dragons.

But when the witch prowls forward, eyes glowing with a cold light, when the people before her shrink back, or scatter, or try with little effect to fight back, she remembers what she once entered that forest lair for.

████

Her aim is true, and her claws are sure. The witch, who always knew it would be her, if anyone, dies proud.

The clan is grateful - the once-hatchling now has a home as she wanted.

(Didn't she? She's not so sure.

It's true that the witch was harmful and destructive, and she knows she did a good thing by stopping her.

But it's hard not to miss the only familiar thing in your life.)

Still. Still.

She's recovering, now. The dragons around her reach out and hold her paws in theirs. There's no need to be hard now, they say. There's no need to fight every day now, to move until your muscles scream and your claws bleed.

So she's trying something different. She's trying peace. She's trying life, rather than survival.

She's learning. She's moving on.

And one day, she knows, it won't hurt so much.
