Biography

Consultations with the Spirit-Caller

Irvin crept, coils swaying clumsily to the side, into the light of the ghost flames. The cave was dark, with little light except the candles and the oddly luminescent smoke they produced, but he could see the eyes of the Spirit-Caller. Green, and nearly glowing.

She peered at him, the bright slits of her eyes narrowing. “Ah. Finally.” She said, the faint shadow of her neck craning backwards in the gloom. “I thought you’d never show up. You’ll be leaving the clan soon, you know.”

“That’s why I came.” Irvin asserted, slithering forwards in the way he’d seen his father do, or at least trying to. He tripped over one of his own wings in the process. “Mother said I had to, because I’m leaving.”

“It would be a crying shame to leave the clan of the Spirit-Caller before you could get a consultation with her.” She commented dryly. “Well then. Do you know why I wanted to see you?”

He blinked wide yellow eyes at her. “…My soul is weird?”

“Your soul is foreign.” She corrected, wings shifting, as though preparing to fan outwards. There was a glitter of golden body-runes, and the paler glow of the runes on her hood. “I can help you remember. You’re young, so it likely won’t be troubling you much yet, but the memories might make things hard for you in the future. So we’ll open them now.”

“I don’t get it.”

“You don’t have to. Come and stare into the candles.” The ghost-flames fanned out in front of her, aligning strangely. She cast a clawful of bizarre herbs to the floor and set them alight, mouth opening just slightly to show the glitter of her teeth. “Breathe it in, child. This won’t take long.”

It was hard to actually avoid breathing the smoke in a confined cave like this, so Irvin had little trouble obeying that. The smoke made him feel dizzy at once, and not-quite-awake, as though he were caught in the eddies of a dream. He looked up, and his eyes caught on hers. They were glowing, now, and her gem as well, and the feathery filaments at the edge of it. Her neck-feathers fanned out and her wings as well, shimmering in bizarre and dreamlike colours in the dark.

He wasn’t certain what happened then. He thought the Spirit-Caller said something. Maybe a lot of things. The sound of it blurred and distorted in his ears, and his vision swam, but he thought he saw her claws casting through the air. There was a tingle of magic in the smoke, on his scales, shivering down the full length of his body-

Irvin’s awareness returned later. Much later. There was light filtering through from the mouth of the cave, and a dawn-chorus starting in the sky. The smoke was entirely gone. “Oh.” He said, Memory dawning on him like the sun outside. A life of memory, and a sharp end. A mistake, but…it had been a good life. “That’s why I want to make friends with everyone’s familiars.”

“Yes.” Said the Spirit-Caller.

“And the Beastclan people.”

“Yes, it is likely.”

“I think I want to make friends with some toridae.” He said, ponderously, and she laughed at him. The long line of her neck curved back, and her teeth glittered.

“Go, then.” She said. “Go, with your memories intact. Live another life, wherever the light takes you. And don’t forget the clan you were born to.”
