Deimos defends the Keep. That is his purpose; certain people have made it so. But for now, he helps ensure that no one can escape the Arena by helping to maintain the layers of spells around the Perimeter. There are others with him, of course; the Perimeter is large and one mere gaoler cannot patrol it all. Others of his kind, programmed with purpose, and others tied down, pinioned by debts or contracts or shadowy pasts they are running away from. But he was the first and the strongest, he is considered aptly cautious yet incisive, so he is their leader.

He turns to the almost invisible dome of spells, sees the colours and tastes the sounds and the lights...what a beautiful thing it is. What a horrible purpose it serves. Does he feel sorry for them, the ones inside the Perimeter? Of course he does. Poor things forced into violence instead of being left to wither. They were, he is assured by certain people, all doomed in any case; best that we make use of their sputtering flames before the wax runs out and the wick is burnt to a wisp.

Still, he does feel sorry for them.

But he is one of the last lines of defense. Should anyone breach the Perimeter...well, then he will have to obey his orders.

He must do his duty.
