The vast expanse of rocky terrain and scattered stones was silent except for the occasional screech of hatchlings or the soft crumbling of ancient pillars. As dusk approached, the sky bled into the land as the horizon washed Dragonhome in swirls of red, gold, and amber. The Earth Realm had always been dreary after the fall of the Earthshaker, but in between the sieges and exiles, many dragons found comfort and contentedness among the mountains and caverns. Extremis, the Imperial daredevil of the Misfit Menagerie, inhaled sharply before taking to the rapidly darkening skies.

Below, Extremis watched his clan engage in (what he believed to be) insignificant activities. The hatchlings dug into the cracked landscape, searching for food, while the rest of his clanmates trained, read, or explored the ruins. He himself enjoyed such activities from time to time, but Extremis was rather…gifted in another field altogether.

As he flew, Extremis smiled as he thought of the explosion he’d caused last week in Greatwyrm’s Breach, sending thousands of pounds of rock tumbling into the gorge. There’d been chaos within the clan once they found out he’d done it, of course, but Extremis felt a sense of satisfaction run through him. It was a tremendous experience—spontaneous, sporadic, spectacular.

His superiors, unsurprisingly, were unhappy with him. But like many times before, Extremis had gotten out of the situation with a few smooth words of promise and nothing more than a slap on the tail. Thus began his newest endeavor—a trip to the Cairnstone Rest on the edges of his clan to steal Sornieth’s most valuable tombs.

The wind felt good against Extremis’ face as he continued gliding. He passed over the Shattered Plain. The barren expanse filled the Imperial with first disappointment, then sympathy. In his birth clan, Extremis never saw a day that wasn’t filled with wonder. The magic of the Starwood Strand always illuminated even the darkest of his days, and the first of his mischievous acts took place on the Crystalspine Reaches. The sharp, jagged peaks provided the perfect perch to toss unhatched Arcane Eggs from. Seconds before they hit the water, Extremis would swoop down and grasp the shell between his teeth, twisting and twirling in between the crystals as he carried the egg away.

Extremis smiled. He’d had some good times in the Starfall Isles, and now he intended to keep those daring possibilities alive in Dragonhome. After all, the desolate and lonely history of the Earthshaker cast a spell of darkness over the Earth Realm that had lasted centuries…someone had to break the tension every once in a while with a bout of fun activities, right?

The ancient burial grounds of the Cairnstone Rest were sacred to all but Extremis. Being a native of the Starfall Isles, he found that there were far more important discoveries to be made beyond the edge of the world than whatever lay beneath the earth. But the thrill of bringing something back to his superiors when it was strictly forbidden—now that was fun. When he landed, several stray Mirrors scattered as the dust flew up.

“What are you doing?” One hissed, crouching defensively.

Extremis shook off the dust from his landing and glared at the Mirror. “Searching for the strongest warriors in Sornieth. What about you?”

The Mirror growled, but knew better than to attack an Imperial, especially one the size of Extremis. The pack dispersed, and Extremis was left alone staring at the collapsing columns and pillars. Even standing over the tombs of the deceased was forbidden in the clan. Extremis could’ve very easily began to dig, but that was time-consuming, and Extremis had other plans that evening. Cliff-jumping from the Cloudscrape Crags. Exploring in the Shrieking Wilds. Diving in the Leviathan Trench. He was booked.

“We’re going to have to do this as the Flamecaller would have wanted,” Extremis muttered to himself.

Bracing his hind legs against some rocks behind him, Extremis leaned forwards on his forelegs and let out a screech that rivaled the fiercest fighters in Sornieth. Instantly, his eyes lit up with the fire he had never learned how to breathe and his scales glowed with Arcane magic. The ancient mausoleum turned to ash, and the ground beneath it sank.

Extremis wiggled his tail happily and dove in the newly created hole.

He was standing on a ledge, surrounded by darkness.

“This…is how an adventure starts!” He exclaimed.

With the agility of a lifelong daredevil, Extremis sprang off the ledge and clasped the next closest protrusion, making his way down foothold by foothold. When he reached the bottom, the floor dipped even further beneath the earth, creating an enormous cavern carved of burned amber. Gems and jewels hung from the ceiling like icicles, glowing gently under the little light seeping into the chamber from above. Several smaller caves littered the walls—hiding places for the Realm’s rarities.

Like the skeletons of fallen warriors, thousands of years old.

Extremis gathered one of his own—an Emperor Imperial from the First Age, and started to make his way back up. His actions became a bit more urgent when the cavern started shaking. Panic was not a feeling Extremis was used to experiencing—but when a sharpened emerald large enough to impale him whole fell right by his head, well, Extremis figured he should get out of there.

He escaped with only minor injuries that the clan healers could take care of. Extremis gripped the tomb tighter, and when he returned to his clan, he nearly crushed some hatchlings playing in the dirt.

Many gathered around curiously to see what the troublemaking Imperial had brought. Extremis had been feeling extremely proud of himself up until the clan leaders, Izilth and Athyg, saw exactly which ancient warrior Extremis had brought home.

“Do you have any idea how serious this is?” His clan leader demanded. The strong Mirror was livid, and the rest of the clan members immediately backed away, some whimpering, others growling in distaste.

Athyg appeared by Izilth’s side, and his eyes widened when he saw which tomb Extremis had stolen. Extremis shuffled and picked at his wings, not understanding what he’d done wrong.

“You,” Athyg began slowly, pulling Izilth closer behind him, “have stolen the tomb of—”

“Don’t,” Izilth breathed, “say his name.” Her eyes—all four of them—shifted to Extremis, who looked uncomfortable at this point. “You’ve gone too far, Extremis. You traveled to the forbidden lands, and now you’ve cursed us all.”

Izilth stumbled away from Athyg’s grip, slinking up to Extremis’ now trembling form. “Everything I’ve worked for you’ve ruined in one trip.” Her voice was low and strangely calm. Strong but apprehensive. Assertive but disappointed. “You—”

But a squeak startled every dragon in the clan out of watching the confrontation.

The tomb started to glow.

Headcanon:

His tertiary isn't actually part of his scales. It's actually just paint he applies to himself every day for good luck. It usually takes him about two hours to apply, although he sometimes gets sloppy if he's pressed for time. He often surprises his clanmates when he comes home without his characteristic markings.
