When Chironex was still only a hatchling, he and his twin sister Carukia were playing along the edge of the Wandering Contagion, catching fish in the murky waters that slapped against the pestilent shore. They could never remember which one of them it was later, but one of them was caught in the riptide and began to be pulled to sea. The other, naturally, followed in an attempt to save their twin from drowning in the too-strong current. They were both swept in and pulled under, tossed around by the sea.

When they awoke, half-drowned and bedraggled but miraculously alive, they were on the shore of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Kelp stood over them, eyeing them up and down. After he introduced himself, and they explained their circumstances, Kelp nodded and offered the hatchlings shelter in his lair. He led them to a cave-mouth that opened into a series of undersea caves, and once they met the rest of the Shell Grotto clan it was decided that they would stay until they were older and strong enough to make the journey home.

Chironex became a much faster and stronger swimmer over time, and often helped Jelly with gathering. He has a keen sense of where to find the tastiest seafood and the most valuable shells and is one of the clan's best divers. Chironex came to love the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and by the time he had grown strong enough to travel back to search for his old clan he no longer wished to.
