Name Meaning: “Dark Eyes”
"Go. Go now, while they aren't looking, and do not return."
The last words Sarida's sister had spoken to her did not hold any verbal cues of love or care, but the meaning still weighed the same: "Escape with your life, because I cherish it along with you."
The two sisters were pitted against one another in a generations-long ritual known as the Legacy of War, taken up by vile dragons all across Sornieth once rumor spread that this was the way that the fearsome dictator Branwen had come to power.
The ritual forced all hatchlings of a bloodline's brood to fight to the death until only one victor remained to carry the "purified" bloodline. However, Sarida's bloodline was supposedly tainted by her mother. aunt, and uncle. They had attempted to escape as young dragons, corrupting the purity of having only one descendant of the previous generation.
Perhaps it was true -- perhaps the bloodline was tainted. Or perhaps the glimmer of hope that life outside the Legacy was so much more promising simply tantalized the mind more than any idea of a "pure bloodline" ever could. At least, that was how Sarida felt as her wings pumped and her muscles burned long after the Wandering Contagion fell below the horizon.
All the way across the Scarred Wasteland and straight over the Sea of a Thousand Currents she soared, both awed and terrified of just how big the world truly was. She wanted to explore it all, fly above all of Sornieth in one night, but soon after she felt that her wings could take no more, the darkness of exhaustion and hunger pounded her vision. She plummeted from the sky and collapsed with a thud into the dust on the shore of the Shifting Expanse, a billowing cloud of sand signaling her crash landing for miles across the flat Highland Scrub. When she awoke, she was sitting in a nest of shrubbery and feathers, shaded from the beating sun by a rocky outcropping. The dragons of a clan known as the Thundering Hollow had apparently found her and taken her in after seeing how worn and malnourished she seemed. Since then she has been recovering in this strange new place, and trying to make sense of this magnificent new Sornieth.
