CARDSHARP

Fortune favours

FORTUNE telling is not, strictly speaking, legal within the town limits. Nimol skirts this issue by never actually reading anyone's fortune; rather, he draws cards to show to interested parties and allows them to ask what, in general terms, each card means. Of course, Nimol's answers are always structured in such a way as to seem oddly specific to just that asker, and usually with just a hint of imminent calamity on the horizon that they will want more from him.

I'm sorry, he'll say, the law's the law. He'll make a great show out of sadly shuffling the card or cards back into the deck and stowing them into their velvet purse, his demeanor somber. Isn't there something you can do? the mark will ask, and then the game is on.

You see, Nimol knows someone who can help, because of course he does. That someone is Coquelicot, a gifted thief who spends most of her time disguised as a lawful practitioner of the occult. Together they'll sell the mark on a gamut of solutions to their problem ranging from the feasibly plausible to the tantalizingly outlandish -- emphasis on sell, because fixes for problems this severe couldn't possibly come cheap.

The mark's fortunes tend to clear up as their pockets start to run dry. Nimol and Coquelicot usually end the show on a high note, so as never to arouse suspicion or draw the ire of the law, and always politely wait until the mark's gone on their way before wallowing in the coin.

IMPRESSIONS
His cards are smudged with what looks like inky fingerprints. He keeps his gloves on when he's not working, wary of leaving purplish ooze in his wake. The secretion from his skin isn't dangerous, just unsightly when it gets out of hand, and paranoia-inducing for a dragon for whom leaving too much of a trace behind could be trouble. His teeth are ornately carved in a flowing, runic script, which is rubbed with some blackish substance to make it stand out sharply against the pale enamel.
RELATIONSHIPS
COQUELICOT is the kind of person you're either friends with or victimised by, with virtually no middle ground. Nimol chose the former option. She's the smoothest talker with the lightest fingers he's ever met and nothing makes him laugh his wickedly perfect laugh harder than feeling her slip a stranger's wallet into his pocket on a crowded street.
MARULK is big and dangerous, and Nimol's got a soft spot for big and dangerous things. The Skull & Shark's hulking bouncer has never kicked Nimol out for flashing his cards, primarily because, as far as he can tell, Marulk doesn't care about some superstitious old law about fortune telling. Nimol always buys Marulk a drink when he stops by the Skull & Shark; sometimes he even drinks it.
