Neph comes from a well to do clan in the mountains of the Icefields. He wanted for nothing growing up but really that was far too boring for him. The youngest in a long, long, list of siblings Neph wasn't satisfied with just being another disappointing child of Aiden and Aurora or becoming another cog amid the Icewarden's vast number of Exalted legions.

So he left home and quickly fell in with the wrong crowd. But you'd be surprised how far good looks and demure personality will get you. Neph is good at playing that part too and letting others think less of him. It let him get close to some very powerful dragons and learn things he wouldn't otherwise. Under the guidance of some of the best in the business Neph was taught how to steal. But he isn't a petty cut purse or cat burglar. Neph is a dragon of taste. He only steals things of actual value. While not very well known Neph managed to carve himself a niche in the shadowy circles of Sorienth.

Then Neph's eyes were too big for his claws. He tried to steal from the wrong dragon and that was how he ended up in the Master's graces. He attempted to steal a very old book from the Master. As one could imagine the Master didn't appreciate his things being taken.
