Buck
Traveling Dragon
tumblr_njgstdvszo1qd0s8ko9_100.png

I'm a retired traveling dragon who went on adventures in my birth Flight, Water.

"They sell eggs?!" For a small dragon, the little Nocturne could screech louder than a typhoon on the Thousand Currents. Delenn hopped in rage, fluttering her wings at a bewildered merchant at the Auction stand.

"They're orphans--" the merchant spluttered. He pulled a crate closer toward him so the precious eggs weren't damaged in the wake of Delenn's ire. "Think of it as adopti--"

"They're baby dragons!" If Delenn's voice got any higher only the Hainu were going to be able to hear it. Her Wildclaw mate turned his sharp eye toward them and readied himself to help fight. Delenn might begin a fray, but he finished them if there was anything left.

"Please," the merchant pleaded as other dragons were beginning to gather and poke their snouts into the unraveling scene. "I have to do this for my Clan! The eggs all go to good homes! Treasure doesn't fall from the clouds and we haven't enough room to adopt all the orphans which are found when we go out scavenging."

Delenn's eyes narrowed dangerously and her rage made her diminutive body seem to expand alarmingly into the size of an outraged Imperial. "I was an orphan. My egg was locked away in a chest until someone found me when while they were battling in the Kelp Beds region!"

"I'm very sorry bu--"

"Give me that!" The massive water egg was larger than her body, but she clamped her wings around it in a possessive hug.

Her mate decided that killing an auctioneer might not be the best idea when the rest of the Clan was browsing for apparel, materials to take to Baldwin or hoping for an animal friend to bond with. It wouldn't be good form and Whuffhome didn't need to start a war. "We'll take it," he told the auctioneer.

Delenn twisted her long neck over her shoulder, looking murderous, but her mate made arrangements with Whuffhome's treasurer. It took the help of one of the Imperials to move the egg, particularly when Delenn refused to let go. Nocturne and egg aboard the back of a friendly Imperial, both were deposited on the warm shores of Whuffhome.

Buck hatched almost instantly and shook the eggshells from his back. Blinking around at the bright sun and lapping waves he yawned, gobbled down the pile of fish left for him, and slept. This went on while Delenn fussed over a baby larger than her own parents and he grew to adulthood.

Whuffhome was already cramped and a huge bustle of activity, so Buck decided to strike out on his own and see the world for himself. One day, he promised Delenn, he'd come back and share the stories of his adventures.

Art of Buck while he was with the Guards of Violetah

Book of Urban Legends Travel Journal

Quote:

July 30 - August 14, 2018
Buck arrived at the lair of the Silent River in the midst of a big dominance battle between Water and Earth. It was a very busy time, and everyone in the lair seemed to have an important job to do. At first, poor Buck was feeling a bit left out.

_____

Our clan mother, Thalia, doesn't miss much, though. She quickly noticed him trying to keep out of the way as the other dragons bustled about around him. He seemed in awe of all the dragons returning from battle training, ready to go serve the Tidelord. Before long, Thalia had sent him off to the mire with two of the lair's top trainers.

Now that he was in training himself, Buck found the experience rather overwhelming and scary! His first battles were mostly spent hiding in the brush, trying to blend in with his surroundings so the beast clans would leave him alone. (One of the other young trainees took this picture.)
DS8F4am.png

Arca and Caliban were experienced trainers, though, and they soon taught him the art of scratching and dodging. When the battle ended with Water's victory, everyone's spirits were high and he was granted an extension on his visit! Now that the battle was over, there was also more time available to spend training. Buck became more and more confident with his new skills and was even able to learn more advanced techniques! It wasn't long before he was a valued part of the team. Here is a picture of our very own Buck taking down a Wartoad!
fdkpsOR.png

When I first arrived upon the wet, rocky shore, a small grey fae greeted me. A floral fae fluttered beside her, but the remainder of the clan ignored me.
“Salutations, wanderer. We foresaw your arrival many tides ago, but I regret to inform you that you will not find what you are looking for here. Still, you are welcome to stay and explore the many bounties of the Tidelord.” She introduced herself as Yue, the moon priestess and high priestess of the Council of Oracles. Yue stated that Arke, the clan’s messenger and emissary, would be available to assist me during my stay.
“Now, if you will forgive me, I must attend to my duties. In Reliquom Laboramus.”
~~~
The majority of this clan is very stand-offish. Without Arke’s company, I fear the monotony would drive me mad. The messenger fae is always willing to talk, although she is somewhat flighty and forgetful. She showed me to the Council’s alchemy lab, where I discovered the formula for the skink gene. Arke complimented my new look and noted my apparent skill at alchemy. Then she complimented my new look again, which I chose to interpret as enthusiasm and not as her regular forgetfulness.
~~
Before my departure, I was summoned before the council.
“Buck the Guardian, of clan Whuffhome” a voice echoed beside me. “You have not found what you are looking for, but we have found what we sought in you.” I looked around in confusion. The oracles surrounding me were unfamiliar, but seemed to represent the 11 flights. Yue spake again.
“Buck, we are a small, inconsequential clan, and yet the Tidelord, in his omnipotence, has seen fit to provide for our needs. In return, the Council works to fulfill his prophecies and to hunt down those who sully the deities’ names. But we remain a small clan with little influence upon the outside world. We ask you, a traveler, to seek out blasphemers and false prophets and report them to us. What do you say?”
September 14 - September 20, 2018
At Goddess Zilla's School of Higher Education I was able to explore many different subjects. One of my favorites was archery! I quickly earned the rank of Marksman and was told if I ever return here that I was welcome to join the Guards that protect the school from the wild beastclans.
There are so many hatchlings here, the school is designed to help them grow up to be strong dragons, some of whom go on to specialized training schools before heading off on the search for Tidelord or to forever serve in Tidelords army and keep the Beastclan hordes at bay.
September 20 - September 29, 2018
When I finally arrived in the territory of the Guards of Violetah I found a Guardian and a Wildclaw waiting for me. Apparently one of the other members of the clan had enchanted the territory so that any 'intruders' could be detected immediately, and the clan's seer had sent these two to collect me. They were nice enough fellows, keen to chat to someone that had travelled as much as I had.
In fact, this entire clan is pretty friendly. I was paired up with the Guardian who had met me on the boarder, Ariman, and he showed me around the clan's island, introducing me to his clanmates. He also continued to ask me about the clans I had visited before. He's very interested in travelling to other clans, and has even made plans to do so, but life got in the way and he just hasn't been able to. Apparently his charge is 'battle skills', and he wants to go out and learn the techniques employed in other clans. He's promised me that we'd go out training tomorrow, so that should be fun!
~~
Well, we went out training today, and it was pretty fun! The younger dragons Ariman and I trained with were quite impressed with the skills I had picked up training at Clan Silent River and
Goddess Zilla's School of Higher Education (I think Ariman was too, I saw him copying me a few times). Though, I have to say that for a clan that calls itself 'Guards', not many of the dragons had extensive warrior training. Ariman was probably the best, followed by their clan leader, Brek Violetah, but they just could not keep up with me.
Though, they have very good hunters. When we came back from training they'd put on a feast, and we'd partied late into the night. In fact, I'm feeling pretty tired, so I'll end this entry here.
~~
I left the Guards of Violetah today, a bit later than I had planned. They threw a massive party for my leaving, even bigger than the feast, and they gave me tonnes of food to help me on my journey. The clan's scribe - I think her name was Driscoll - gave me a drawing someone had made. Overall I had a good time with them, but I felt like it was time to move on.
October 3 - October 8, 2018
„I thought Guardians were bigger.“ - „Compared to you and your ego? No. Never were.“ - „That hurts a bit, you know?“ - „Could you two stop fighting and lend my a hand?“ - „Why? To tend to a Guardian that bumped against our friend and knocked himself out?“
A Guardian that bumped against who? And knocked himself out? There were strange voices around me when I regain consciousness. I could make out two male voices and a female.
„He got a splinter in his forehead“, the females says.
„Well … pull it out? It doesn't look that deep, mum“, this time a male.
„Wait? A splinter? Are you saying my beloved ship splintering apart?“
I feel carefull claws against my forehead before they pull out something and a surprised squeak left my trouth.
„Awww, he's wake up!“ - „Helloho? I ask you something?“ - „Just shut up, Rack.“ I finally opened my eyes and blinked a few time. Before my stand three Imperials. The female green colored one was the nearest one and I noticed the little splinter in her claws. She was the one who pulled it out.
„Are you okay? I mean besides the fact that you look very confused“, she ask gently, „Don't worry about the splinter. It wasn't that deep and doesn't do any damage.“
„Where am I?“, I asked her.
„That's a good question, you know?“, the bigger red Imperial stepped forward, „You are on my-hmpfgnh.“ Before he could finish another Imperial stepped beside him, silenced him and dragged him away from us, mumbling something like 'You will not introduced ourself as 'your harem' this time!'.
„And who by the Tidelord is this?“ The blue Imperial besides the female one chuckled.
„Well, that was our captain“, he explained, „You are on board of the Red Ghost. Well you somehow managed to bump into her and knock yourself out. We rescued you.“ I nodded thankfully.
„I'm Namtso“, the female introduced herself, „And this is my son Mael.“
„I'm Buck, nice to meet you. And thank you for the help.“ I heard a deep low tuned roar from behind the two before they sigh heavily.
„Don't mind them“, Mael turns his attention towards me, „Can you remember what happend?“ It takes me a few moments to search through my memories in which I sit down before the two.
„I was on the journey back from the Guards of Violetah“, yeah, that was the last clan I visited, „And then I want to head to … Uhm … Ah yes, to a newly formed clan in the Fishspines!“ I tilted my head before making another squeaking noice.
„I got lost and then ended up in a pretty strong current!“
„Ah, so that's when you bumped into our ship“, Mael figured out, „Well against the currents I can't do anything good but wait a sec.“
I've never seen an Imperial turned around that fast without knocking anything with his tail. On the other hand this ship IS gigantic.
„So? Are you sailors? Merchants?“, I asked Namtso a bit curious. After all I travel to learn more about the clans around here.
„Hm?“, she turns towards me, „Oh no, my dear. We are pirates. At least that's what most of us will tell you. For myself I think we are more of adventurers and treasure hunters. And my mate“, she points towards a grey and massive Imperial who is debating with the one they called Rack, „and I we try to help those who are searching for something important.“ I nodded. That sounds great even if the pirate-part scares me a little. But they seems to be nice.
„Do all of you help those who searching?“ Namtso shaking her head.
„No. Most of our crew members are searching for themself and Rungholt and I are hear to help them. He guards us, I'm trying to hold them alive.“
„So, you are a healer?“ She nodded happily before turning her head around once more. A small humming tune left her when she snuzzles against Mael who does the same. They seems pretty close.
Mael himself hummed at me now and handing my over a Map Kit.
„Here. These may help you getting around“, he says. I carefully took the Kit. A simple scroll case but inside where a couple of maps showing the Sea of Tousand Currents. And on top of the maps where a beautiful green colored scarf.
„Just a little present from us“, Mael explained, „As an apologize for our very woody ship that hurts your head.“ He laughs at that.
„Thank you!“ And then it hits me. „Uhm … map reading shouldn't be so bad but … uhm … How do I figured out where the cardinal points are?“ Mael nodded before turning his head and shouting over the the grey Imperial – Rungholt if I recall correctly – and Rack.
„Do we have enough room for a guest? For a few days at least?“ The older Imperials look confused at each other before turning towards a smaller blue one – the one who took Rack away before.
„Why are you looking at me? You're the captain!“ - „But you are my quartermaster. Do we have room?“ - „Idiot! Of course we have. More then enough.“ - „Yes, we do have room for our 'head through the wall'-guest!“ And before he could add anything more Rungholt roared at him and drag him away. Mael chuckles and turns towards me one more time.
„See, you can stay a couple of days and I can teach you who to read the stars and the sun and who to figure out the cardinal points.“ I happily agreed to that.
After a bunch of days I sit on a massive rock in the Sea. The crew of the Red Ghost standing on their ship and waving goodbye at my in the distance.
„You sure you are okay on your own?“, Mael ask, floating in the water next to the rock.
„I think so“, I answered honestly, „I'm not perfect but I will getting better.“
„And no more way loosing?“ - „No more way loosing. Promise!“ He hummed again and snuzzled at me. It seems a bit of a habit within this family.
„Take care of you, Buck. And if you need us just call out for dad … I mean for Rungholt.“ I nodded.
„I know, I know, he told me that too. Just jumping into the water and calling for him.“ Mael snickered.
„Overprotectiv dad is overprotective“, he giggled out.
„He sure is. But it's good“, I smiled, „Well then. Maybe I managed to find that newly clan now!“ A wave a goodbye at Mael before jumping into the ocean and continue my travel.
11.10.2018
The green guardian was following a pretty female spiral, she was showing him their clan's camp. It wasn't the biggest camp he had been to, clearly it wasn't the one withthe biggest food stocks either. However it seemed to accept all kinds of dragons, all kinds of colors, all kinds of breeds. It was messy and unorganized, yet it looked friendly enough.
"And this," the spriral paused, pointing at a huge underwater cave, it's entrance decorated with dyed moss and rotten fish. "is our food stock. Feel free to go in and grab some snacks if you get hungry." The guardian smiled. "Thank you."
In a few hours, he had picked a meadow right next to the seashore as his temporary home. "No dragon except Shallow likes to come here." The mighty guardian had said, his eyes looking old and wise. "I'm sure he won't mind if you stay here for a few days. Just make sure not to go too far into the forest, we live close to the Sunbeam Ruins." . "Well, that explains why it's so warm and sunny up here!"
After finishing organizing and settling down on the meadow, he noticed a purple pearlcatcher returning from the forest the clan leader had warned him about. The pearlcatcher was wearing red clothing, which just looked like decoration on him. He also had a gray-blue dragon walking with him, he appeared to be a lot younger yet hyper than the other.
"Greetings!" The purple pearlcatcher said. "I'm Eos, and this is my son, Glass. He convinced me to go and get you something nice. Like a memory!" Then Glass proceeded to pull out a small leather bag and drop its contents in front of Buck's claws.
Bone Fragments
The gray dragon had eyes, a lot of eyes, watching Buck, curious of what his reaction would be.
"Thank you for your thoughtful gift, I will treasure it!"
As the warm morning sun spread light all across Sornieth, Buck opened his deep blue eyes. Another new, special day, full of hope and life. He stood on all fours with his wings brushing against the soft grass. The ocean was calling him, its pearly waves hitting the beach, and then crawling back like a shy crab. He smiled.
Chewing on some clown shrimps, he noticed a yellow nocturne approach him. He looked quite fresh and happy, like an optimistic young adult. He had a bunch of thick meat strips stuffed in his maw, which he seemed to "save for later".
"Hey."
"Morning!"
The nocturne kept talking with a full mouth
"Name's Charles, or SoftTouch, as our elders like to call me" He chuckled, and went on. "Heard you were traveling around the Waterflight. Did you find anything interesting yet?"
"Yep! nice to meet you, Charles."
"Mind if I sit here with you? Everyone's busy and I've got no one to talk to.
"Sure, I'd be happy to talk"
Charles smiled, his eyes closed, and sat right next to the small guardian- but compared to his size, he was huge. He then rested his ridged head on him, now swallowing all of the meat strips at once, and somehow not choking on any. Buck examined the nocturne carefullly, then closed his own eyes as well. Silence could mean a lot of things. It was silent.
Buck spent the rest of his days with Charles, just talking, talking, and talking. Charles showed Buck hidden caves and tribes and many more things. Buck taught Charles to fight. But most importantly, they showed each other how fast two souls could tie. Buck had a goal to achieve, so he had to leave.
"You're leaving now? The sun didnt even go to sleep yet."
"I know, but I felt like it would be better if I'd go before it would get dark."
"Right."
Buck grabbed his pouch full of things he had gotten on his journey. He folded his wings and jumped down, landing on the beach, about to leave their clan territory. But then, he turned around to look at Charles, for the last time.
His eyes begged him to stay, for at leat a little bit more. "We can watch the sunset; together." They whispered. "I won't ask for more, I promise. Just the sunset." They added.
"Charles? I think I changed my mind."
"Huh?"
"We wont see each other again, so I guess it wont hurt if I stay for another hour!"
They sat on a cliff, high above the sea, where they felt like nothing mattered, and everything was a dream, a dream that would end one day. The Sun painted the clouds to peach and the sea to blood red. They didn't speak. They didn't think. Just sat together, waiting till the World lost it's light again.
"uh, here. Keep this, don't forget me. ok?"
Rasa Pottery Fragment
"I won't. Don't worry."
The guardian gave the nocturne a tender hug, and the nocturne hugged him back, tryng to hold back Tears. First friend he had ever made, the first dragon he had ever trusted, now had to go.
"I wont forget you, so don't forget me, you yellow potato."
Buck had a wonderful time in the clan of rushing riptides he had many adventures with the clan and watched many hatchlings grow up to dragons. He will be missed very much and is always welcome to come back.
Time can pass without our even noticing. Subtly, but with speed days can run into weeks, months, or longer. In what felt like the blink of an eye Buck found himself a seasoned traveler, with many locations marked on his maps of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. His knowledge of navigation, archery, combat, and diplomacy had grown from greenhorn to proficiency to mastery. He could boast having visited many if not most of the clans that reside in the Tidelord’s domain, and speak of good friends and relations in quite a few of them. When once he had been a gangly youngling just setting out, needing training, he himself had now helped train an entire generation of fighters, guards, and warriors in the name of the Tidelord.
So many would look at him, and speak of his accomplishments. They would either tell tales about his travels, or ask some of him. No one would doubt his incredible life… except for Buck himself. While he had greatly enjoyed his travels, and all of the lessons and lives he had touched, he could not help but feel incomplete.
In all his travels he had never found what he was truly looking for. He had never found his charge. He had never found a mate. He had never found a place where he felt that he was supposed to call home. And this gnawed at him. As much as he knew and loved the Sea of a Thousand Currents and its residents, he felt in the depths of his heart that he would have to explore beyond- out of the Tidelord’s domain- if he was ever to solve the mysteries of his quest.
Slowly, he planned a trip. He would head out the strait between Fire and Wind territory, heading towards the Frozen Floes. He wasn’t familiar with these areas, and as such it was a bit of a gamble, but he decided it was still one of the best courses of action. He may be considered a big name in travel, but leaving the water still left him uneasy. He may as well delay the inevitable as long as possible. Several days into his journey down the strait, he spied ships. Unusual ships. Flying ships.
Curiosity fluttered in his chest, helping to overcome his nervousness. He followed their flight, skimming just above the water below them until they disappeared over the ravine walls and out of sight. His wings flapped with powerful strokes, taking him up, away from the water, and towards the wind territory- somewhere near the edge of either the Crescendo or maybe a far-removed piece of the Zephyr Steppes. As he cleared the top, his breath was taken away by something he had never seen before.
It was an entire city! A bustling, tightly woven society of what must be hundreds of clans and thousands of dragons. The ships he had spied were landing among wooden docks, floating platforms, and large, boxy warehouse buildings. Houses of all shapes and sizes clustered along the hills and valleys, lit up with the bright colors of pennants, flags, and other similar things displayed around the area. He could pick out what looked like markets, parks, and even a large mansion or two. He allowed himself to gawk a short while, simply taking it all in until his wings started to tire- these Wind-territory air currents wore him out quick! He softly glided down into one of the many parks he had seen, even more amazed by the sights around him up close.
Here he gained detail that he had lacked from so far above. He could smell fresh bread baking, and hear the sound of buskers singing on one of the well-swept cobble streets. Water tinkled with a musical quality through an intricate and artistic fountain. Hatchlings were shrieking with joy as they ran over the grass, playing some sort of game. Enamored with it all, he found a shady place beneath a tree and settled down to simply soak it all in. Few paid the guardian mind, other than a friendly passerby saying hello, or a youngling that briefly asked for him to pull their tangled kite out of the tree when it crashed. As he continued to rest, he noticed something odd- his trinket pouch was feeling… unusually warm. With a mote of trepidation, he pulled it out, gently spreading the contents on the grass before him. There he saw the piece of pottery from Charles, his diploma from Goddess Zilla’s school denoting his skill in archery, the picture that he received from one of the Guards of Violetah, and the tiny pieces of bone that the strange multi-eyed dragon had given him so long before.
He had never paid them much more mind than as an interesting conversation piece. Dragons would ask why he had held onto them, and he would simply answer that he would feel… wrong simply throwing them away. They were a gift- an especially odd one at that. So he had continued to keep them. Now, one of the larger fragments was glowing with an intense warmth and light, not quite hot enough to burn and not quite bright enough to blind, but certainly uncomfortable. And most certainly noticeable.
