______ “Don,” said the Adonis' mother, “this female will be your mate for all eternity.”
“I know,” murmured Adonis, who looked up at his mother, walking ahead of him.
“Come,” his mother beckoned, turning to look back at her son. “You will meet Aphrodite today.”
He nodded, and walked out of his den, into the light of the surface.

Standing of him was another Wildclaw, so beautiful he was stunned. Her body was the same colour as her sky blue wings, were accented with white mottling and had beautiful markings on them. Her hands were a dark cerulean, and streaks of the same colour swirled around her joints and stretched up to her head. shimmering scales covered the bottom of her neck and the area above her belly, which was also white, but bluer than her wings. Her tail was also a light blue, and it was striped with dark cerulean, curling down to its end.
She was beautiful.

First Meeting

“I’m… Aphrodite,” she introduced herself shyly, her face turning red.
“I’m Adonis,” he murmured quietly.
Behind, he could see his mother smiling happily.
And that was the start of a wonderful relationship.
Or was it?

1 week later…

Adonis flew down to the ground, excitement gleaming in his eyes. His marriage to Aphrodite was to be tomorrow, and he couldn’t wait to be lawfully wedded to his beautiful wife-to-be. His Eyewing, perched in a nearby tree, flew to him and landed on his shoulder, while he walked into his den. “I’m back, Aph!” he called, looking around for his mate – or at least she would be his mate pretty soon. “Aph?”
He turned a corner. “Aphrodite! There you are.”

His mate turned her bright blue head, her teal eyes meeting his.
A flash of panic.
Then she looked away, her gaze swinging to the ground. Adonis looked to her paws, which were holding a small pouch filled with essentials.
“Aph… what are you doing?” Adonis asked, confused. “Why are you… packing? Where are you going?”

“Don… I’m going to be leaving for a while.”

“What? Why?”

“I… don’t really like the idea of a fixed marriage. Initially, I thought it was fine, but I was thinking about it last night, and it sounds really… restraining.”

“Aph…? What do you…”

“I’m sorry… I need to go away for a while. But I will come back.”

And Adonis could only watch in shock as his beautiful mate grabbed her things and walked out of their den. She spread her lilac wings and flew into the sky, the only sign of her previous presence there a piece of fabric that had fallen out of her pouch. Adonis picked up the silk, its soft surface like Aphrodite’s hand, which had once held his.

“Aphrodite…”

And for the first time in a long, long time, Adonis cried, tears falling from his bright blue eyes and soaking into the ground.

1 month later…

The blue Wildclaw sat in his den, a Nocturne hatchling curled beside him, sleeping peacefully.
Then there was a movement outside. The Wildclaw looked up. “Who’s that?”

Teal eyes came into view. Then a long Spiral flew into the light. “Adonis?” he asked, slinking up to him like a snake. “Are you Adonis?”
The one being mentioned looked extremely confused. “Um, yes. But… who are you?” he asked, confused. “Where are you from and why are you here?”
“I’m Coal. I’m a messenger, and I have a message for you,” the black and white dragon said, flapping its teal wings. He grabbed his pouch and took out a yellowish white scroll, tossing it to Adonis.

“Here.”

The Wildclaw barely managed to catch it, and even then, he nearly woke up the Nocturne, who turned in its sleep. “Um… thanks.”
“You’re welcome!” called the Spiral, who was already flying away. “Now, I have other messages to deliver, so I’ll take my leave!”

Adonis stared at the spiral’s receding shadow, then shook his head. That was weird, but never mind, he thought to himself. He looked down at the scroll. It looked a bit old and tattered, and one edge was torn. The paper was already yellowing.

He opened up the paper.

The first thing he saw was Aphrodite’s handwriting. It curled across the page, weaving in loops and lines that he thought of as perfect. He read the letter.

Adonis,
I’m sorry I left you before we could be together.
I just thought it would be better if we weren’t wed before I left,I know that would break your heart even more.
I’m disguised, I won't come back at the moment, but I will come back someday.
Don’t come and find me, please. You will only bring misery upon yourself.
Your love,
Aphrodite

Adonis put the letter aside.

He knew what he had to do.

No matter what he did, no matter what anybody else said…
He would find her.

And they would be together again.
