I remember little of my past.

Vague flashes of this and that...
...Running on dirty streets with angry shouts behind me...
...The pain of shackles on my arms...
...A weight of armor on my shoulders...
...The moment I crumpled in the middle of a battlefield with warmth slowly leaving my body.

They could easily be written off as dreams if I didn't know better. He warned me about digging too deep for the lost memories, the insanity that comes with reaching for what isn't there anymore and how much it's like jumping into a void and reaching out for a ladder that doesn't exist. But every so often remnants remain. They aren't usually important, tiny fragments you once forgot to ever remember so they went unknown in the process with other things you know as fact and don't think about, like language or numbers.

But I remember him.

I remember his face above mine and the pity on his features.

I remember hating that pity so fiercely.

He says I spat on him at that point, and that he was tempted to leave that memory, but it was my last act before dying so it carried a trauma with it.

I must have really hated pity in my old life. But again, I try not to think about it.

He's never shared his name with me, not in all the years we've traveled together. I simply know him as Cloak, which is still probably more than anyone else knows about him. He calls me Dagger, but I know my real name. It's strange how I've been allowed to keep that, because the others never seem to remember that part... or maybe they're happy to forget and toss it out themselves.

I don't know what about my name is so key to who I am. It's never mattered in my new life and I get the feeling it never mattered much in my old one either. But it's mine, so I can't help but loathe to let it go.

My name is Kindra, and no matter what I am now, I will never stop being me.
