Biography

When she arrived, Soul had no intentions of calling the Clan of Cross her home. It was a way station at best, a place to recover. She was young and weak at the time, starved half to death from her travels. The Shifting Expanse had not been kind to her escape, leaving her dehydrated before she had even gone beyond its borders. Yes, the Clan of Cross was a merely a resting place until her strength returned.

They were kind to her, at least. Many of the dragons were Mirrors, and understand Soul's need for shelter and a pack, even if she didn't understand it fully herself. They made sure she had access to fresh food even when the permanent residents of the clan were hungry too, and when she slunk off to hide all alone, they gave her the space she needed. Some whispered that she would always need a pack, that she could not be alone forever, but no one pressed the issue. Sometimes, the pack instinct could be held at bay by fear or trauma, and rather than upset Soul, uncertain of what held her back, they allowed her to carve out her own space, to operate on her own terms.

Her cold kept others away, even when she stayed long past what was expected of her. She was no longer transient, that was clear, but she continued to hold the clan at arm's length. What few conversations she had were empty of the personal, usually about the upcoming weather and how it would affect the hunt. Sometimes, she directed dragons to each other, somehow a quick study in names despite her unwillingness to socialize. Her keen senses helped her to know where most dragons were at any given time of day, and when the clan figured that out, they tried to involve her more, asking where this dragon or that had gotten to, asking if she wanted to come along and find them. She never did, and only gave the directions she was asked for before vanishing into one of her many hiding places again.

There were hundreds of places to hide for the resourceful, and Soul took full advantage of that. When she had even less interest in contact than usual, she made herself comfortable in one of her hideaways, settled into soft nests she'd painstakingly curated over time. The cranny beneath the roots of one of the oldest trees in the clan was her favorite because it was almost impossible to see, and totally sheltered from view. Smaller dragons could find their way down there, it was true, but they would be hard pressed to find the entrance in the first place, and even if they did, the hollow Soul favored had a sharp bend in it that made it seem as if there was only a shallow overhang amongst the roots, not an entire dragon-sized cavity. There was no better place on earth than that secret place, and Soul guarded it carefully even as she told herself she would soon have to move on.

But plans changed again, as they tended to despite her best efforts. First, she became enamored with the place among the roots, so much so that it became her home. But second came the Clan Dark-Blood, and with it, a dragon.

He was different than the rest of his party, the first time she saw him. His right fin and wing were shredded beyond repair, and he kept to the edges of his party, far too watchful for someone so young. Someone as young as Soul. She felt a connection then, and had she been a Guardian, she would have been certain the other dragon was her charge. As it was, she was still drawn to him inexplicably, and perhaps he to her. Surprisingly both of their clans during the visit, the pair got on well, becoming fast friends. It was the first time the Clan of Cross had seen Soul so willing to share her time and space with someone else, especially a stranger.

It continued, too, long after that first meeting. Every time Clan Dark-Blood traveled near the Clan of Cross, the young dragon, Artillery, could always be found in the company, and always spent the bulk of his time with Soul. On rare occasions when Cross dragons were sent to Clan Dark-Blood, Soul accompanied them, and quickly found Artillery. They were inseparable before long, tied to each other by something intangible but unbreakable.

Perhaps that is why Soul has finally settled in the Tangled Wood. She still remains unwilling to open up to most of the Clan of Cross, but her cool, collected demeanor always falls away when Artillery is around. Behind their backs, both clans call them mates, not friends, and if word were to get to Soul, she would pretend it isn't true.

It is, though. The roots beneath the tree are home, and so is Artillery. She could never leave.
