A lone dragon trudged through a barren and white landscape, wind whipping against his form as he descended along the ridge of a mountain, icy blue eyes narrowed against the howling and shuddering wind. He was a speck of black against the white-washed land, heading towards the weak glow of the faltering sun. Just beyond the horizon lie the sea, the imperial's first destination, for he was seeking warm lands that lie beyond even that. His sights were set on the Viridian Labyrinth, far away from the cruel and unforgiving environment he had spent his entire life in. The imperial had to get away-he just had to! There was nothing left for him here, and he couldn't bare to become as cold as his father, as ruthless as his mother, as callous as his brother. It was simply fate for any dragon that lived long enough in the icefields that their heart too would eventually turn to ice. Blacktorn shuddered against his brother's touch, his brother's crackling gaze sending shivers down his spine. Beyond him lying the mangled body of his sister, the snow stained crimson with her blood. His brother cracked a sickening smirk, his muzzle and sharpened claws wet with blood. "What have you done, Nightshade?" he had sputtered out, voice thick with grief and horror. He searched his brother's gaze for any smidgen of remorse, though his eyes were cold and emotionless. Nightshade tossed his head contemptuously, throwing a disdained glance at her lifeless body, "She was too soft," he replied simply, flicking his tail against her. The imperial thrust his muzzle close to Blackthorn, his breath stinking of rot as he growled, "Are you going to make me do the same to you?" Blackthorn had felt like a cornered piece of prey as he shrank beneath his brother's words, "Mother and father would be disappointed in you if you killed me, I'm a useful warrior." He forced the bitter memory to the back of his mind, and let out a low growl. The last bit of light had died away now, and darkness fully engulfed the sky. It was time to stop for the night. Blackthorn was tossing and turning, those damned memories swirling through his mind without restraint. The imperial let out a low sigh, flexing his claws against the sandy floor of the cave.
