When Phobetor was a child, they tried to kill another fledgling.

It was an accident. The boy called Morpheus a half-breed, spat the word like venom at their sibling’s feet, and the next thing they knew, their knuckles were caked in blood. They had only wanted to hurt him a little, make him feel even a fraction of what Morpheus must have felt, but something…

...something went wrong.

This was the defining moment of their youth.

Their dede told them that there was a darkness inside of dreamwalkers that dragons did not possess; at least, not in such a literal sense. It was the burden they had borne, what had made them a Cataclysm, and what they had hoped they would not pass down to their children. In Phobetor, they said, it was particularly strong. It had taken hold of their anger and twisted it into hate, so black as to swallow them whole. It would do so again, if they let it—for a nightmare could not know peace in the waking world.

“What do I do?” Phobetor had asked.

“You must be stronger than it,” Dreamweaver had replied. “You must quiet it when it whispers to you, and remind it who its master is.”
