Eshu: From the Yoruba people, the trickster orisha of streets and crossroads, Eshu cleanses pathways for spirits and travelers on their journeys. He is a spirit of balance and guidance, but is the darker counterpart to Elegua, to whom he is like a shadow, only wilder and more unpredictable. Though it is said that Elegua (or Ifa in some myths) holds the power to tame him. Eshu is considered a divine messenger, an intermediary between the supernatural and humanity. He is also believed to have power over fortune and misfortune as well as being a personification of death in some regions. He often draws mortals to temptation and tribulation in the hopes that it will lead to their maturation. Thus, he is often considered a difficult teacher, but ultimately a good one.
