Peredix is a product of love and history. She bears her father’s exotic coloring and her mother’s dazzling wing pattern. When she hatched the young wildclaw was stunned by the assortment of colors and smells inside the cozy lair of her parents. Flowers cascaded the walls that undeniably smelt of her Father. Oasis had grown and cared for each specimen that decorated the painted walls of the cave. Each stroke showed her mother’s dedication and patience. Honour hadn’t left a single rock unpainted in the temporary den. Her mother had bore the greater strength of the pair so she stayed behind at the nest while Oasis had scouted the surrounding areas and hunted for her. As Peredix admired her surroundings her parents looked warmly on each of her hatchmates. Family trees were important to wildclaws and each hatchling would be remembered in her parents heart for if they ever left the clan. After a few days of letting the hatchlings get their bearings the two wildclaws led the young ones to the clan’s lair. It was like a fairytale. The tiny waddling wildclaws emerged from the earth to live in the clouds. The cloudsong was beautiful crafted-a perfect home for the artistic traits her parents exhibited.

As a child it brought Perdix great joy to run across the reed bridges to hear the music rafting from her footsteps. The wind carried it so that all could hear. The clan was always in song with dragons flittering about. The skies a twisting beauty of shifting clouds and dancing clanmates. It was a truly beautiful upbringing. Perdix knew no strife or struggle. Everything was beautiful and all wants easily granted. At least to a child’s eyes it was that way. As Perdix grew older she found she did not want to be a gardener like her father or a painter like her mother. She enjoyed beauty and felt and home in it but it wasn’t her passion. There was a great number of wildclaws in her clan and didn’t understand the great divide between them. They ordered her mother around to decorate their dens in a tone that ruffled her plumage. Her father constantly growing flowers simply to give her mother the right ones for the dyes. At one point Perdix shouted at an older wildclaw and walked away in a huff. How dare he look down on her! What made him any better than her?

Oasis met Perdix in her balloon with tired eyes. He began to explain she couldn’t behave in such a manner. It would only bring trouble to the family, wildclaws followed strict hierarchies and her parents ranked low on it. Neither took to fighting or hunting for the clan so they were deemed less useful and therefore less important. Their family tree was full of a cast of supporting artists, lore keepers, musicians, and dancers. It put them low on the hierarchy but provided its own protection. The family had less worries of rivals pilfering their nests to steal eggs to strength their own family trees. Understandably this upset Perdix more so when she learned her own mother had gone to apologize to the wildclaw she had yelled at. The couple wanted to protect her from a possible duel to the death. She was young! Still growing, not a child yet not an adult. This crotchy wildclaw would dare challenge her when not even fully grown. If might made right than Perdix only needed to sharpen her claws and show that her family was no joke.

In the following months she would fly coop and train on the ground. The wind flight kept to the skies so this was the best way to train in secret. She took to training in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The neighboring flight would be a great cover. No one would watch from above and she claimed to be collecting shells and coral to decorate lairs as was expected of her. Plus she found the slippery rocks a fun challenge. If she could master fighting in this difficult terrian the skies would be no problem. That being said she had never received any formal training. Her “super cool and amazing moves” were just overly complicated, easily telegraphed messes of claws and teeth.

Well past the point of giving up Peredix was greeted one sunrise by the low chuckling of a guardian. She was a great deal larger than the teen and her strength clear from the rippling of her muscles beneath her scales. The low light shined of the clean pristine white and silver scales of the Guardian. The changing colors of the skies could not compare to the golden warmth emanating from the armor she adorned. She introduced herself as Sheer. She was part of a clan in Fishspine Reef. She first notice the wind dragon some months back when she would dive carelessly for random shells to take back. The guardian could tell from her lazy choices it wasn’t her real reason for the constant trespassing into the water flight. She had watched with amusement and admiration as the wildclaw “trained”. After careful deliberation Sheer had decided to take Perdix in as an apprentice.

The young wildclaw was blown away with just how fast and powerful the guardian’s strikes were. She obliterated the training dummies in seconds. The following months were tough. Her muscles agonized from the constant use. She was having trouble hiding her soreness from her parents. Everyday was exhilarating though! Perdix had never felt so happy and alive. Whether it was listening to Sheer recount her past battles-victories and losses-, going over battle strategy, pouring over ancient scrolls of famous sieges, or the daily grind of battle practice. Just the amount of thought put into a single strike was astounding. She had never knew that you could plan so far ahead for a single clash. Perdix felt she finally understood the sparkle in her parent’s eyes. The joy in her father’s as he tended for each leaf individually following different routines for each plant’s needs. The excitement in her mother's as she sketched out elaborate designs for a clanmate’s den. This is what she was meant to do! She was a fighter and with joy she would drag down those who looked down on her family.

After what felt like ages of planning with Sheer she left to challenge the wildclaw her mother had apologized to. Sheer seemed weirdly reluctant to let her go. Perdix would think of this later though. Peredix marched head held high to the well respected wildclaw and challenged him to a duel. It was as if all the sound had suddenly disappeared. Every clan member had gone still. Only the howling wind remained. Her parents may have tried to avoid this but it was within her right as a wildclaw to fight for her honor.

“What!? You think you could lift a claw to me hatchling,” the older male scoffed. His clanmates did not laugh or comment. Instead they respectfully backed away eyeing Perdix as if she were a dumb beastclan trying to attack the clan leader. It was clear in their eyes she was making mountains out of mole hills. No matter how much they look down on the infraction she took to heart they could not deny her. And if this wildclaw denied her challenge he would be admitting his offense and that he was in the wrong to talk down to her family. Truth was always worth fighting for. “I hope you do not fear death” he snorted before flaring his wings and letting out a battle shriek.

Perdix returned the shriek without a hint of fear. She found it easy to dodge his swipes. He could not nearly cover the distance Sheer could with her greater size. And any hits he could land would be child’s play to the intensive training she got through the past year. She maintained her concentration even when wafted by her parent’s scent. They had clearly flown from their balloons to watch the challenge. She could smell the sour scent of their fear. Perdix couldn’t stop the smile from over taking her features. Fear? Sheer would scold them for not trusting in their daughter to hold her own. Seeing the slowing of the opposing wildclaws strikes Perdix ducked below his stance and headbutted him in the underbelly sending him flying through the air crashing into the reeds. She giggled as his falling was literal music to her ears the varying notes from the reeds lifting into the air.

She let him think he could get up before swiping her tails under his unbalanced legs sending him forward crashing his chin onto the reeds. Wildclaws are bipedal and have a hard time catching themselves with their smaller arms, a smart warrior would be aware of this and protect themselves from falling. Her opponent was underestimating her. She pulled back her leg and let it crash into the side of the older male’s face. An audible crack as she broke a few of his teeth leaving him seeing spots. He got up in a daze and she bite him where his shoulder met his long neck. He screeched as blood filled her mouth. She clamped down tightly before lifting him and tossing him once more. She could hear his form shaking. The mumbles of those watching a chorus of the chiming of reeds. She stood above the wildclaw letting her strong leg hold down her opponent by his neck. “Do you yield?”

She knew. Perdix knew. If the roles were reversed the wildclaw would have killed her without a thought. He would be praised. Many wildclaw challenges end with death. She had no intention to kill though. Sheer had so much love and compassion. How could she sully her teacher’s name in a petty argument? If he had done physical harm to her family or made more than casual threats to them she could justify his death. But not over this. She would have mercy.
“I-I y-yield” he croaked between tears his pride utterly destroyed. Perdix felt embarrassed for the older male. Her clan was not especially talented in battle it seemed. He should have been a top tier fighter. His battle had been pathetic though. He hadn’t gotten a single scratch on Perdix. She guessed the clan’s peaceful lifestyle meant their strongest fighters were actually weak in comparison to other clans. She lifted her claws and helped him get up. She let him lean against her as she lead him to the clan’s healer. Perdix wasn’t unkind afterall. He was clearly too out of it to make it on his own.

After that fight thing changed for her clan. Her family was lifted through the ranks despite their clan roles. Perdix was put the head of all the fighters which ended up being a pitiable role. There was no challenge. No rush! There were no battles to be fought, wars to win, or even a steady supply of beastclan to fight off. With a laugh Perdix realized that by reaching adulthood she had outgrown her clan. If she wanted to utilize her potential she would have to leave. She told her leader that she was leaving to find her own. She bid goodbye to all her family members. She loved them with all her might but she needed to value her own happiness. They gave her their full support. They instilled her with advice that they had garner off her siblings that had joined other clans throughout the years along with a care package of supplies to help her make it on her own. She is not ashamed to admit tears were shed by both parties.

Perdix spent the next few years exploring each flight. She enjoyed the thrill of facing off beastclan and making camps between territories. She made a name for herself as a warrior. When passing by she would help out different clans that suffered from beastclan. After her first year traveling Perdix met Horizon, a ridgeback with a peculiar fashion sense. Originally she had set up camp near him because she sought to help him. It seemed though his damage was not something she herself could fix with a quick or organized fight. His wounds not visible and enemies a mystery to her. After one if her longest stay in a single location since leaving her birth clan she asked if Horizon would like to join her party and travel with her. At first distrust was clear in his cunning eyes but he gae in. He joined her in fighting off beastclan and helping out radom clans. He started smiling more and giving a real laugh. Maybe this was the best she could offer him.

After her fifth year of traveling Perdix was ready to settle down. She loved the adventures she shared with Horizon but she longed for a home. As was normal with her species she wanted a den to decorate with her victories. She wanted to boast to others of her victories. To share stories with other warriors. Horizon had already heard of our experienced himself her victories. Perdix wanted a fresh audience. She mentioned her longings to the ridgeback one night and he hummed in thought.

“Is there any place you eva’ felt at home-I mean truly really at home. Such a strong feelin’ of belongin’ that nothin’ can compare?” He watched her careful taking note of all her shifting emotions holding her accountable if she even thought about lying to him. The problem of living every moment with someone over the last four years meant she couldn’t hide from his gaze. When Perdix found her answer she felt wary about sharing it. Would she and Horizon part ways? He hadn’t shared much about his past and never said anything about wanting to settle himself. Besides, even he wanted to she doubt he would feel incline to join a water flight. Ridgeback notoriously hated water. “I can see ya overthinkin’ this, where do ya wanna go Peri?”

“I believe we should pay my old teacher in the Fishspine Reef a visit.”

“Then that’s where we oughta go,” he nodded before laying his head down to sleep.

Perdix blinked at him shocked at how easy and simple it was. She shouldn’t have been, it was so Horizon but sometimes she felt herself get too caught up on the intricacies of each species. Afterall her birth clan held on steady fast to those traditions. With a smile she lay her head down thinking of the journey ahead.

When the two had finally found the clan they respectfully greeted Jasper and Chariot the coleaders. They exchanged plesantries before the two met up with Sheer. It was a heartfelt reunion that Horizon watched from a distance. Perdix was shocked at her former teachers tears. Sheer explained it was like a daughter returning home after years of waiting. She explained quickly that she had actually taken on the wildclaw as a charge. That her search hadn’t been over until she took the younger dragon under her wing. That she no longer felt complete not being there to watch over and protect her-not that she thought the wildclaw needed it. They spent the next several evenings catching up and swapping stories. After much deliberation Perdix and Horizon decided on settling into the clan. Where everyone could be family and they value one another. Along with that with Sheer and such powerful leaders it would surely not bore her. It could be a home, their home. Perdix was finally home.
