Gumbo started out life in the Windswept Plateau feeling forlorn and as if he had no purpose. He wandered aimlessly through adolescence and young adulthood, dabbling in a little bit of everything. He lived on both the righteous side of life and the dark side of life. Gumbo just felt lost. This was until he came across SunsetMoon and the Smoldering Sagittaria Clan. Seeing how fiery SunsetMoon’s passion was for protecting the Clan, Gumbo felt a longing for something into which to funnel his passions. He became one of SunsetMoon’s Sagittarians quickly, having great respect for her dedication to her Clan.
Gumbo poured himself into learning all he could about the Fire Flight’s Patron Deity. Flamecaller was a powerful wonderful deity. He felt the call to commit himself to Mather, as she was called by many in Fire. But he felt the urge to honor her in life, rather than through exaltation. Gumbo began to extoll her wondrousness to those who would listen and soon had a small following. He and his small following committed themselves to live as good and piously as they thought Flamecaller would like them too. They often found themselves falling short of their own expectations, whether through coveting lairmates’ treasures or bickering amongst themselves or other clan members and numerous other ways. Because of finding his followers and himself wanting, yearly Gumbo would decide that they needed to recommit to their faith. He felt that they would be better able to live piously if they were able to party one last time. So he designated one last day as a day to get all sin out of their systems. The group planned their hatch dates to only be once a year to hatch the morning of that one last day. After their eggs hatched, they had one long day and night of debauchery. Gumbo and his followers adorned their bodies in a variety of accoutrements for the fun. Gumbo chose to call this last day of sin before rededication Mardi Gras. After founding his little group of Mardi Gras dragons, Gumbo felt the urge to proselytize to other flights. He felt it important however that the dragons in other flights honor the Patron Deities of their respective flights, not the Flamecaller. Because of this, Mardi Gras is accepted across the flights.
