"not all treasure is silver and gold, mate."

Freedom.

That’s what the sea was to him. Freedom from his past life and from any rules society would force upon him. Even here, on the Riptide, there was freedom from what life had given him. This was where he could live out his dreams and realize his future.

Olly lifted himself onto his hind legs and gripped the railing between tiny digits. The sun was rising high, washing warmth over him and carrying the promise of another day’s adventure upon its rays.

“Clear waters!” his voice carried over the throng of life on the ship. He was to keep a sharp eye out for anything that stood out upon the vast, blue sea.

Wind whipped across the deck, rustling through his feathers and fur then falling into the trap of the sails. Olly practically gleamed, beaming into the wind and fighting to keep his eyes wide open against the salt spray sting.

Yells went back and forth over the ship behind him, mixed with the splash of waves against the ship’s hull. Olly curled his neck, looking below to watch white foam lick over darkened wood. His sharp eyes caught sight of several silvery fish dancing just beneath the surface.

The small coatl turned, his tail whipping around and the armor strapped to his wing shoulders casting a bright glint from the sun. He ran at the mast, knowing it was his turn to sit in the crow’s nest and watch the horizon for any friend, foe, or land. His delicate claws gripped at the rigging and he climbed, a grin spreading wide over his face and his tail whipping to help him keep his balance. Wanderlust glowed in his eyes.

“Yo ho, yo ho,” he sang under his breath while he climbed.

Olly fearlessly pulled himself into the crow's nest perch. He leaned on the edge and unhooked his spyglass from the pocket at his waist. The calls on deck melted with the sounds of the ocean, continuing a familiar tune in his head. Olly began to hum and swayed his head gently with the song of his heart. He closed one eye and brought the spyglass to the other.

“A pirate’s life for me!”

bottom.png

Olly was born to abusive parents. They beat him, punished him for every single thing imaginable, whether or not reasonable. Olly liked to sneak out at night and venture to the seaside docks, where he would spend hours watching the vessels sail past, the wind buffeting their mighty sails, propelling the colossal ships forward. Olly would sometimes spend hours and hours learning the sea shanties he'd often hear the sailors singing. He would marvel at the crews on the decks, working tirelessly, and imagine what it would be like if that would one day be him.

He would dream of a life where he could have the freedom he so deserved, sailing among other pirates, his dearest ambition…

But Olly was not fit for the life of a pirate. He was a weak one, and practically worthless to any ship. His bones were fragile and though his heart was big, his physique was not one worthy of the unruly sea. Olly’s parents made sure to enforce this thought, and deep down, Olly knew he would never be accepted as a seafarer, for he was unsuited for the rage of a pirate’s life.

bottom.png

It was midnight, the moon was full, and the sky was darker than ever. Olly gazed at the rippling waters, calm and silent, reflecting the moonlight. A seagull flew past, squawking.
It had to happen soon. Olly could not stand his parents’ abusive ways anymore. He was going to leave, run away, and never come back.

And that very night, he left.

Fled with no intention of ever returning, to seek a new, better life for himself.

Olly journeyed far and wide, experiencing many adventures and encountering hardships. He only wanted to spend some time on the sea, perhaps even find someplace he could call home.
Months later, the young dragon staggered upon the Port of Tortuga. He marvelled at the passing sailors; for Tortuga seemed to be a privateer's dream. Then he spotted it: the royal navy. Olly watched them come and go, proudly fighting and working hard to serve their king. It clicked in Olly’s mind; they had to be accepting new recruits. He would join the royal navy.

The navy wasn’t what Olly had originally imagined. The ranking system was enforced heavily, and took every chance they had to beat him and order him to do extremely difficult tasks, tasks that one like Olly saw as nearly impossible. To help himself get through the abuse, he would remember the sea shanties he learned prior to the navy, and sing for the rest of the crew. They would mostly be songs about their own hardships, turned into a jolly tune to keep them going.

"And ye cat o' nine is a dear old friend of mine! For fighting every day with me hide I must pay.
A good whippin' now n' then helps inspire all ye men, as the officer on deck flays the skin off me neck!"

But eventually it all became too much for a weak coatl like Olly. He was tired of enduring the cruel privateers, it was a terrible job and he was absolutely done with it.

bottom.png

Olly ventured away from the sea for a while, furious with the mess he had gotten himself into.
The royal navy was not what he had dreamed of at all. Lonely, broke, and overtaken by sadness, Olly felt he had nowhere to go to. This was rock bottom.

And then a hurricane struck. It hit the very place where Olly was and swept him away, finally depositing him in the vast blue ocean. The ruthless disaster left the dragon clinging on to a piece of debris, shaking violently in fear.
For days he drifted along the currents, cold and starving. He didn’t know what to do, and spent a long time pondering. After all, he was left alone. Just Olly and the ocean.

Olly pricked up his ears. Did he just hear something?

A splash.

Something dark and scaly flashed beneath the aqua surface--no, it was just a wave… wasn’t it?
He paused, listening frightfully in fear of something out of the ordinary.

A deafening sound -- then nothing at all.

A low, melodic humming.

An enormous sea serpent emerged from the waves, roaring, and Olly shrieked. It flung its colossal body forward, jaws open wide, fire raging in its eyes, saltwater dripping off of its back. With an almighty yelp, he weakly launched the sword he’d stolen from the royal navy towards the beast, and threw his wings over his head.

Another roar told Olly his throw had met its mark. Without a moment’s hesitation, he fled, flailing his wings, being viciously pursued by the great sea serpent.

He managed to throw the monster off, but Olly didn’t dare stop in his path. He swam until he reached the shore, sputtering water and breathing heavily.

After a few days of wandering to and from dimly lit taverns, begging for treasure, asking for a job, Olly finally settled down in defeat.

That was, until he heard the whispers, the rumours. Until he saw the sign, Olly didn’t believe it.

“Did ye hear?”
“She’s signing up men tonight!”
“Captured her own ship!”
“Look right here, the sign, see--”
“A female!

A pirate’s ship? A captain who was recruiting? Could Olly possibly try and be part of this? It was his life’s ambition, one that cost him dearly, right in front of him. He was unsure, but a glimmer of hope still remained in his tortured and beaten heart.

"What are you needin’?”
“I-I am in need of a job.” Olly stammered. “I caught wind that you’re signing men up tonight.”
The captain looked away, pondering his offer. “You’re not the pirate type, aye?” she stated.
He gulped. Am I? “Aye--I mean, no… I can prove myself, ma’am.”
“It’s cap’n to you.” the rough-looking coatl growled. Olly swallowed and tried not to shudder. He needed this. He needed to be strong. She stared at him, sizing him up and down, and he self-consciously wondered how tough this captain was.
“I be needin’ another rum,” she said to the bartender, and turning back to Olly, she added, “I need one more deckhand. We leave tonight.”
Olly wondered what to say in return. This was his chance. He could do it… he was sure of it. He was determined.
The captain studied him slowly, no doubt considering whether or not to accept him.
“Laddie… can you sail, can you fight?”

And it turned out he could. Olly had some talent, and he grew stronger with seafaring. He no longer became sick on long journeys. His fencing abilities improved, and with that, so did Olly’s confidence. He obtained the rank of first mate onboard Erzulie's ship, the Riptide. His friendship with the captain thrived, and although she found him annoying quite often, he knew that she enjoyed his company.

The crew endured many adventures and hardships together. When a sea serpent attacked the Riptide, in fact, the same one Olly had encountered before, Erzulie freed it from its curse, and Olly became good friends with it.

When a great, raging storm threatened to overturn the ship, Olly and the crew battled it all the way to the shore, working vigorously.

Olly knew he had succeeded.

This was living.

bottom.png

Olly has become a great pirate, gaining strength and love, something he lacked prior to sailing the seven seas. With many more challenges, adventures, and threats to overcome--

But this time with friends at his side.
