Biography

NEREUS

Children of the Water Flight often keep the same trinkets in their nest. Nautilus shells dangle over their heads as they sleep, and shimmering fish scales line the walls of the den, sparkling as the light touches them in just the right way. Every day, there is a new broken seashell lying on the floor, and hundreds more waiting in the wings to be played with. Water hatchlings want for little in the way of fascination.

But Nereus was an unusual child, even by the standards of a flight populated by prophets. Where his peers were content to play with the gifts of the sea, he always found himself staring beyond. Every flash of light on the decorative scales caught his eye, and the glimmer of sun on the waves was the most captivating thing he knew. The moments spent outside of the nursery were near and dear to his heart, giving him immeasurable peace to look on the glittering sea.

Except it can hardly be called peace when it stirred in him such a longing to move. Dawn after dusk after dawn, he watched the sun dance on the water, and at last he decided it was a sign. His gift of sight was not one confined to scrying bowls and mirrors, but one inherently tied to the Lightweaver's domain. With his family's reluctant blessing, Nereus left the Sea of a Thousand Currents behind, in search of the truth he was certain awaited him in the Sunbeam Ruins.

Yet his desire to understand the full depth of his calling led him not into the Lightweaver's glory, at the fabled Beacon of the Radiant Eye, but to the Hewn City, where light was scarce even in the height of the day. It was there that every glimpse of the sun was precious, just as it had been in his earliest days, when he was not allowed to leave the nursery unsupervised. In the Hewn City, something awaited Nereus, something that resonated with the very core of his soul.

Finding it, though, was no simple task. Truth is elusive in that way, always calling but never quite within reach. On the cusp of it more than once, Nereus could do nothing as it slipped further from his grasp, eluded him once more. The Hewn City was a test of his patience, of his visions, of his faith in the future he swore on. It could not possibly come true if he did not persist, but each morning, he had to convince himself that it was worth persisting, that this task should not be left to some other dragon.

And yet the rewards were not as expected. In the heart of the Hewn City, after weeks of traveling through the darkness, trusting in his uncanny foresight to lead him out of harm's way, Nereus found the light. It was little more than a simple bauble at best, so small it would have fallen through his claws if he picked it up too carelessly, but it shone like a star in the night. His doubts vanished at the sight of it, and without hesitation, he scooped it up and saw the truth.

To this day, what he witnessed defies explanation. What he felt, however, remains written in his scars. He recalls the ascent toward the sun, toward the truth and the light, but the fall is mercifully absent from his memory. As he has been told, he was found lying in the Hewn City outskirts with his leather wings shriveled and curled like burnt parchment, and his luminous eyes damaged beyond repair. The researchers who discovered him took him to Sol, a nearby clan's healer, and the Spiral worked tirelessly to save Nereus's life.

Now, Nereus has taken up residence in the clan that brought him back from the brink of death. He knows not where the bauble that nearly killed him went, only that it has given him a profound new insight into the world, and new truths to explore. Most days, he can be found meditating the garden, tucked into his veil no matter the weather, focusing on a world of prophecy he could not see clearly before.

He has also found love in his time with his new clan, becoming mates with Seraph. The two are inextricably linked, with Seraph's many eyes providing Nereus with glimpses of the physical world that he can no longer perceive, and Nereus's incredible visions sometimes flashing through Seraph's curious, powerful mind. Together, perhaps they can unlock the secrets of Nereus's truth. Or perhaps they will spend eternity together trying.
