Son of Firsts -- Clan Leaders Admiral & Contessa
Emissary from Nature
Chancellor of the Lair
Cardonis came to Talmaedia's lair as Emissary -- the First Emissary from Nature -- when both the Lair and he were very young. His parents were Clan Leaders. He felt the weight of being Son of Firsts from the time he understood what it meant. When it came time to make his choice - to Serve or to Travel, he chose Travel. He thought his parents were pleased with his decision, but in the end it didn't matter all that much, because he was extremely pleased.
He had come to the Lair with a dryad, named Tella, whose people had befriended his father's clan. Tella remained his oldest friend and companion, an invaluable asset to him over the years, whose counsel he treasured and together they served their adopted clan very well.
Cardonis had an ... interesting relationship with Talmaedia. They began as foolish lovers and grew to be friends and colleagues. They remained steadfast partners in governing the lair.
When the strange new magic appeared in Sonorith, unease swept the through the lair. Dragons were fearful of the having the eye mutations visited upon their offspring.
Talmaedia stepped up, as she always did, herself taking a potion that lightened her own eyes to show there was nothing to fear. She also came to him and asked for a nest and urged Eramitis and Esqueville to breed and show families there was nothing to fear.
So far so good, although privately, Cardonis wondered about the fate of a child with the cursed multi-gaze. The Seer eyes- that was something else again. Talmaedia opened the lair to those already shunned from their previous clans - and when all were mature, she would have a representative of all other elements save Shadow and Plague. Those two she shunned like a sickness - but the rest - it was clear that they saw things no regular dragon did.
Eventually, Talmaedia softened her stance on the two flights when it became clear that each Flight was necessary for a full understanding of this new magic across the land. But she would have none of the oozing pustules of Plague or the gaping dark holes of Shadow. Instead she brought in a Plague Seer of the Fractured Sight and - much more controversially - a Shadow Seer with the Multi-Sight.
Talmaedia argued strongly that the multi-sight, with its ability to see alternate futures was an advantage not to be dismissed out of hand for reasons of fear.
Cardonis often wondered if Talmaedia didn't have a bit of the Sight herself, for no sooner had she made these changes but didn't Agamemnon and Cynara have the first hatchling of the Lair with the Sight of a Thousand Currents. And more to the point, Talmaedia herself had now hatched a son with the Multi-Sight! He was a Tundra, thank the Stars, not a Mirror like his father. Everyone in the Lair had heard the tales of the Sight driving Mirrors mad with frenzied visions. Something to do with already having two sets of eyes, Cardonis thought. And having a few screws loose just in general. His opinion of Mirrors was mixed. Excellent fighters, but always running that risk of getting into that mindless swarming mentality. There were grumblings among the Mirrors recently, that Cardonis had brought to Talmaedia. She had appointed no First Among Mirrors. They felt they had no Voice about Lair business. When she said she would take care of it, Cardonis did not think it would be in the form of a liaison with Solaris, much less a liaison that would produce a nest! But now she had a Mirror daughter and Cardonis knew that soon the child would be First Among Mirrors. Of course the Mirrors were well pleased and Cardonis had to hand it to his Leader, she knew her business.
The new magic had awakened more than Seers. The Ancient breeds were among them and once again, the Clan was nervous about the change. Talmaedia took in some young Gaolers and a few adults. Rorik was pleased as they had skills as fighters, but their more primitive ways, lack of adornment and inability to produce nests with other breeds, had some clan members viewing them with distrust. Others felt a deep and wondrous kinship and underwent the ritual magic to change to the Gaoler breed. All in all it was a tumultuous time in the lair and Cardonis and Talmaedia knew they had to find a way to integrate the Gaolers more fully into lair business. Once again Talmaedia came up with a plan. She knew an earnest young Guardian ready to undergo the ritual to change to Gaoler and well, one thing led to another and they produced a nest and not only did the young guardian undergo the ritual, but his daughter did so as well. Now the Gaolers would have a First Voice that was the daughter of the Leader as well. It was, a bit ...unorthodox, Cardonis had to admit, and Mercury was not too happy with the whole situation, but it seemed to be working. The Clan was getting along with the Gaolers much better.
