Biography
O U Z E L
Carnivorous Plant Keeper
Ouzel is a young dragon, who like many within the clan, has been through much. His pale scars stick out behind his whiskers. He is extremely self-conscious of it. He will wear some kind of covering whenever he is seen outside his greenhouse, which is a rare occasion in itself. Often he will visit the scholars of the clan to pilfer through their libraries for small snippets concerning the care of his beloved hot-house blooms. Whilst he would never profess love for them, Ouzel will happily recall entire scrolls on the subject of his specimens. His mannerisms are very dry and at times, sharp. If one of his plants begins to nip at his tail or, lightweaver forbid, a guest, he won't hesitate to smack or even slash off tendrils if they get too close.
His greenhouse takes up very little space in the garden, but it is exceedingly cramped. Ouzel will take anyone who asks on an informative, if brief, tour of the space. The specimens within overlap and seemingly tussle for room; the gasping maws of pitcher plants and patient open venus fly traps are truly enormous, possibly the largest domestic cultivations of their species. Most of the dragons in the lair are reluctant to socialise with the notoriously shy Ouzel, and he is happy to keep out the way in turn. But anyone who shows the slightest glint of interest in his plants can be treated to a trove of information.
Virid and Oupis are his only close companions, with Virid, in particular, showing little fear of the snappier plants in the greenhouse.
"Lass, are you sure about this?" Oupis spoke gently, staring at the mass of tangled swollen vines erupting from one of the pots. There was a gaping opening in the pitcher body of the plant; she'd heard rumours in botanical circles that specimens that had grown this large fed on large prey such as Perytons, Fawns, or even hatchlings.
Lassuarium nodded, everyone deserves a second chance, but her muzzle twitched in uncertainty.
"They eat eggs you say?"
"Eggs and small animals," Ouzel said. The pearlcatcher spoke in a low monotone, dwelling a little too long on the word 'small' for Oupis' comfort.
"And you'll supply your own feed for them?"
"Indeed." He tugged his cloak closer about his ears, his eye contact was scarce.
Lassuarium looked around the cramped, humid greenhouse. The light had been blocked out almost entirely by the tendrils and vast leaves. It was situated on the edge of the roof-garden for years but had seen no use. This wasn't quite what Oupis' had had in mind when Ouzel had asked about moving his collection in. She was hoping for pansies or tomatoes.
Lassuarium took a deep breath and turned closer to Ouzel. He was small and surprisingly young for one so scarred about the face. He seemed overly fond of his cloak for this reason.
"Ouzel, will you be happy here? With us?"
He paused, "I came here because of the wealth of scholars and expansive garden--" He recited the reasonings he gave on his arrival almost to the letter.
"Will you be happy with us? Can we do anything to make you more comfortable, Ouzel?"
He shrunk back slightly and he swung his tail about himself, his back to a particularly menacing looking janustrap. Lassuarium looked about the plants as admiringly as she could to give him time to answer. Oupis shuffled in the silence, Lass was always in tune with what others needed, maybe the boy just needed time to open up.
"I can't-- I can't think of anything." he slowly, "but thank you."
"I think this will be a fine arrangement then, I'll check in again soon to see if changes ought to be made. Good day and blessings." Lassuarium padded out of the greenhouse leaving Oupis behind. Being so much larger, she'd have to take her time exiting through the door way.
She turned before leaving, "Perhaps, you could tell me about, uh, your collection sometime? I don't know much about carnivorous plants myself..."
His face lit up.
