Column is only thinly disguised as Echidna's apprentice. Every dragon of the hull is all too aware of his less-than-capable qualities. Column is harmless, but simple-minded; if not for the zealous attendance of Ninka, Loquaesa would have turned him out of the Hull the very day he appeared. Yet, the young Imperial, hardly hatched though she was herself, immediately became enamored with the similarly young Wildclaw.

It is clear that Column is just as smitten in his own way. Though Column seems unable to speak properly, and tries to hide from most other members of the Hull, he often creates simple gifts and tucks them in places Ninka is sure to find - flowers or spare cuttings from the garden, woven into abstract shapes. Ninka has implored Medranna, more than once, to use a vial of clear glue to preserve the sculptures as variously-sized marbles. After some time, Column even began to approach the Snapper himself. Ninka was overjoyed...

Column is so named because it is the only word he can say, and the only word he happily responds to. While he cannot speak, and clearly has difficulty parsing complex instructions, he does seem to understand the simple duties of trimming and harvesting crops, as Echidna instructs him. The quiet Scydancer is very patient with him, and Jynnajo is not alone (for once) in thinking that the Skydancer plays up his contribution a little too much.

While he can tend the garden to some degree, Echidna does not allow the Wildclaw to assist in the preparation of meals - he does not seem to grasp that not all dragons can subsist on, or tolerate, meat.
