A gray cloak whisks around the corner as a playful chuckle rings out in the shadows. This announces the presence of Zack, king of thieves. It’s true that this cunning Mirror adores gold and shinies, but he knows in his heart that the most sacred treasures of all are those forged in loving relations with his clan. As a fearless leader to a gang of thieves, he constantly gets sticky fingers, nicking expensive baubles from wealthy loyalty. Everything he steals gets redistributed amongst the poor in some way or another. Whether it’s buying dinner for the local urchins or gifting an elder a ruby necklace, he always knows how to give back. He keeps some of the loot for himself, of course, but he often finds himself giving the finest pieces back to his community. He can’t help it. He’s a thieving altruist and a bleeding heart. He is deeply loved and admired for his actions. Zack isn’t motivated by greed, but is instead moved by the desire to uplift those in need. This is what makes him a true leader, and this is how he hopes to be remembered.
No unskilled, run-of-the-mill charlatan can get away with stealing from loyalty. Luckily, Zack is no mere back-alley pickpocket. He is rumored to be the most adept thief in all the land. His growing list of successful heists indicates that there is truth behind this tale. His favorite stories involve scaling the castle walls to raid the loyal family itself. Bards sing songs of Zack the Thief scaling walls, disarming guards, and swinging through tower windows with naught but a grappling hook. His adventures inspire the hearts of thieves everywhere. Ever the local celebrity, he enjoys paying visits to local orphanages in the dead of night to inspire hatchlings with his exploits. He’s gone by morning before the caretakers catch wind of his presence. He makes sure to leave a gift for each little dragon so they know that someone’s looking out for them. A world run by loyalty can feel empty and bleak, but Zack is determined to bring about joy and adventure. He is certainly not just any thief. Perhaps the loyalty could learn a thing or two from him about taking care of their constituents. Either way, if they won’t do it, Zack will.
There’s only one loyal in all the realm that Zack gives half a penny about. Well, more than half a penny. In his opinion, Hikari is worth the weight of the entire kingdom. They met thanks to happenstance– or perhaps it was a twist of fate. Whatever it was, the two were drawn together. The layers of their affections unfurl like petals on a lotus flower. The princess and the thief. It’s a storybook kind of love. Zack didn’t mean to fall for her. He simply wanted to pull off the ultimate heist. Stealing from the loyal palace was a risky endeavor, but the Mirror knew if anyone could do it, he could. He didn’t expect the princess to sense him climbing up the walls. He thought her helpless. He was sorely mistaken. The first night, she called the guards before he could even make it to the window. The second night, he had barely placed a claw on the stone when he heard the warning bells ring. He wondered if the palace was imbued with some kind of magical alarm system. Soon, he discovered that the alarm was Princess Hikari herself.
This was not his only discovery about the Princess. He also learned that she was unlike any of the loyalty he had ever met or seen before. He learned that Hikari is kind, enthusiastic, and brave. She has the kind of fire and spunk that is absent from most despondent wealthy overlords. It was easy for him to fall in love with her. It grows easier each day. He visits her most nights to tell her stories. She adores his stories. They laugh together, eat midnight snacks, and dream about a world where they might be able to adventure together. He tells her she would make a fine thief. She glows with pride whenever he says this. Zack can sense the longing in Hikari’s heart– the longing for a life outside the castle walls. A life where she’s more than just a little trinket. He has promised her that someday, he will make her dreams a reality, no matter what it takes. She will no longer have to hear his stories because she’ll be crafting epic tales of her own. Zack doesn’t know what his future will bring, but he is certain that no matter what, it will have Hikari in it. He cannot bear to lose her. As long as the castle guards keep them apart, he’ll have to keep seeing her in secret, but soon he hopes to be with her proudly in the daylight. When he tells her this, a small, sad smile appears on her face. It seems she is less hopeful than he is about escaping her father’s rule. Zack tells her that if anyone can make it work, it’s the two of them. If they believe in their fairytale romance, it can morph into a shimmering reality. They simply need to trust one another.
