Biography

Covert has made a number of unusual deals in his time with Clan Dark-Blood. There was the exploding cauldron one year, a bed of poisonous flowers the next, and some scattered and dubious artifacts in between. His wares are acknowledged as strange without question, and most dragons have learned not to investigate his dealings too closely for fear of what oddities they might find.

That said, everyone was wondering what in the name of the Shadowbinder happened when Covert came home with light satchels, a heavy wallet, and a Mirror pup who had probably never heard a minute of silence in his life.

Hyena was a strange thing to trade for, even for Covert. The merchant said that his business partners had offered the Mirror to him in exchange for the Vials of Scattersight he had in his pack, but that doesn't mean anyone understood what made Covert think Hyena was the better end of the deal. To say he was lively was a grave understatement; he was a pup, which gave him unbridled energy to begin with, but he was unnaturally vibrant, like no hatchling anyone had ever seen. Even Scott, so accustomed to the ways of hatchlings, was hard pressed to keep up with Hyena once he was introduced to the nursery. Keeping Hyena indoors was a monumental task, and sometimes in his exasperation, Scott wondered if he needed to ask Covert to trade for a child leash, just so he could keep track of Hyena for more than ten seconds at a time.

As he grew, some of that energy shifted, pouring into Hyena's personality. He retained all of his outgoing, energetic habits, but without the reckless abandon of a hatchling. It didn't totally stop him from getting into trouble (he too often raced ahead, only for the consequences to suddenly catch up), but it did teach him not to disappear on a whim and scare the clan in doing so. He began to learn responsibility, which took him a long while to really grasp, and he exercised some measure of discipline.

The day he say through a whole clan meeting without derailing it somehow was the day everyone breathed their deepest sighs of relief.

After that, he was trusted to accompany trade parties when they visited some of the nearby allied clans, much to his delight. He took well to long distance travel, since it gave him something to do at all times. The quiet, perhaps, didn't suit him, but he was always alert, making him a great scout in more perilous territories. He also kept spirits high when breaks were necessary. No one wanted to be away from home for too long, but Hyena's infectious enthusiasm was great for keeping the melancholy at bay.

They almost lost him, though, when they first brought him to the Clan of Hollow. Not to death, thank goodness, but to love, a much better outcome. It was Minx who stole his heart, even if Hyena didn't recognize their shared attraction for what it was at first. She was a hair older than he was, but equally energetic, and the second she challenged him to a race around the clan's lair, his heart was sold. According to witnesses, they flirted without one another the whole race through, and the only reason Minx won was because she teased Hyena so sweetly that he stumbled over a tree root and fell at the last bend. Hyena, devoted lover that he is, says Minx won it fair and square, though, so most dragons have let it go.

That encounter changed the course of Hyena's life. From then on, like Artillery, he regularly volunteered to travel back and forth between Clan Dark-Blood and the Clan of Hollow all to see the dragon he called his future mate, and even if Minx didn't call him that back, the way she raced him and flirted with him and cuddled up with him at the end of the day was more than enough proof for everyone to say it was a match well-made.

Nowadays, Hyena doesn't even travel with the trading parties anymore. He has found more freedom to act as a messenger, constantly in motion and regularly able to visit his beloved Minx, and it soothes his restless need for motion. In the rare times when he is grounded, though, he remains infectiously excited about the world at large, and there are few dragons who can resist sharing a smile and maybe a few stories with him. He is a great source of kindness and innocence in a world not altogether friendly to such characteristics, and it makes him impossible to resist. While not a perfect being by any means, Hyena is still the epitome of optimism, and it brings great warmth to the Tangled Wood.

Bio by Tues.

Among his many runs around the Tangled Wood, he once came across a small Coatl by the name of Nebbi. The small coatl and Hyena became quick friends, and Hyena even let Nebbi ride around on his back when she wanted to. Hyena loves cuddles just like Nebbi does, so it was an easy friendship for sure!
